Calan 80mg tablets are a formulation of Verapamil, a calcium channel blocker used to treat high blood pressure, chest pain (angina), and certain types of irregular heartbeats. Many people have found relief from their symptoms thanks to this medication. Unfortunately, side effects can range from minor annoyances to life-threatening emergencies. Recently, I have been experiencing frequent constipation and dizziness. I'm wondering if this is common and if anyone has found a way to manage these side effects. The fact sheet lists other possible side effects like a slow heartbeat or liver problems which are uncommon but also serious. How can we be sure this is the right medication? Do any of you have some insight as to why doctors may recommend it? Could there be a better alternative with fewer side effects?

I haven't had any serious side effects, but I do get occasional headaches. I've found that staying hydrated helps a lot. As for the constipation, I've heard fiber can help.

I've been lucky, no side effects except for a little dizziness. I've found that eating frequent, smaller meals helps with the dizziness.

I think the side effects are worth it if it means my heart is healthier.

I've been on Calan for a few months now, and the constipation has been a real pain. I've started taking a stool softener, which helps a bit. As for the dizziness, it's just something I've learned to live with. It's not so bad that I can't function, but it's definitely noticeable.
