OpenAI Rumored to be Developing a Smartphone with MediaTek and Qualcomm, Potential End of Apps?

Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, known for his accurate predictions about Apple's hardware plans, has suggested that OpenAI might be venturing into the smartphone market. The AI giant is reportedly collaborating with MediaTek, Qualcomm, and Luxshare to develop a smartphone chip, with Luxshare also acting as a co-design and manufacturing partner. Unlike traditional smartphones that rely on apps, this device is speculated to utilize AI agents for various tasks, potentially bypassing the restrictions imposed by app ecosystems controlled by Apple and Google. This move could leverage OpenAI's vast AI capabilities, particularly with ChatGPT nearing a billion weekly users, to create a daily use hardware product that enhances its consumer reach. The smartphone is also expected to understand users' context continuously, providing more data about user habits compared to an app. The specifications and component suppliers are anticipated to be finalized by the end of 2026 or the first quarter of 2027. Mass production is expected to start in 2028.

Starlink to Disable Precise GPS Location Feature via Local gRPC API Interface by May 20, 2026

Starlink has announced that starting May 20, 2026, they will disable the feature that allows users to determine the precise GPS location of a satellite antenna via the local gRPC API interface. This news, reported by ISPreview and cited by PC Mag, Reddit, and software developers, marks a significant change for users who rely on this data. Previously, accessing this information required activating a special program built into the terminal. Developers who have used this feature for various applications, such as satellite tracking and network optimization, will now need to find alternative methods or solutions to continue their work. The move raises questions about why Starlink is making this change and what implications it will have for users and developers alike. Will this affect the usability of Starlink for specific applications, or is there a broader strategy behind this decision? Let's discuss the potential impacts and what users can do to adapt.

Intel's Stock Soars as AI Demand Revives Chip Sales, CPUs 2.0...?

Intel's remarkable first quarter saw an unprecedented demand surge for its central processors, particularly from AI service firms. The company's stock skyrocketed 28% to $85 in premarket trading, marking a record high that surpasses its 2000 dot-com era peak. This surge adds over $90 billion to Intel's market value, pushing it above $420 billion. Rivals AMD and Arm also saw gains of 7% each, reflecting growing confidence in the resurgence of CPUs for AI inference tasks. Nvidia, traditionally the leader in AI graphics chips, has also recognized this shift and recently introduced a new CPU, moving into territory it had long abandoned. Despite the intense competition, Nvidia's shares remained relatively unchanged. By contrast, Intel's strong performance prompted at least 14 brokerages to raise their price targets, with HSBC noting the increasing demand for Intel's Xeon server CPUs in AI data centers. They cited Intel's strong supply and pricing strategies, which were driven by a tight supply chain in the first quarter. The positive momentum is expected to continue, largely due to higher prices and the increased focus on AI-driven applications. The company's overall growth trajectory and the industry's evolving priorities indicate that the resurgence of CPUs in AI tasks will be sustained in the foreseeable future. Intel's performance in the first quarter is evidence of how dynamic the tech landscape is on how adaptable the giants can be.

LG C5 2025 Review and Comparison with the New LG C6

The LG C5 was easily one of the best TVs released in 2025, as it continued the C-series OLED lineup's long legacy of delivering excellent picture quality and a full range of features at a mid-range OLED price. When I tested the C5 last year, I awarded it the full five stars in my LG C5 review – thanks to its vibrant yet accurate picture, and its top-tier gaming performance – so its successor, the LG C6, has some big shoes to fill. On paper, the C6 is very similar to the C5… in its 42- to 65-inch sizes at least. In its larger 77- and 83-inch models, the C6 becomes the C6H and uses a Primary Tandem RGB 2.0 OLED panel, the same in the flagship LG G6, rather than WOLED EX panel used in the smaller sizes, which is similar to the panels from the last few versions. But, is the new panel really worth the upgrade? Also, how does the new C6 compare to the older C5 in terms of gaming and overall performance?

Thinking of moving from New York to Vancouver – how do the day-to-day lives compare?

I'm considering a move from NYC to Vancouver and I'm curious about how the daily life compares. I'm looking for specifics on the cost of living, commuting, neighborhoods, food, and culture. I'm really into arts and theatre. How do the two cities stack up? What can I expect from the job market? Any tips on where to live and how to find community?

What is the average salary in Chicago and how does it compare to other major US cities?

I'm currently considering a job offer in Chicago and I want to know how the salary I'm being offered compares to the cost of living. I've been offered $85,000 a year in a tech role, but I'm unfamiliar with the city. How does this salary stack up against other major cities in the US? I've heard that Chicago has a high cost of living, but I'm not sure how it compares to cities like San Francisco or New York. Any insights or advice would be greatly appreciated!

How Do Large Language Models (LLMs) Actually Work Under the Hood?

Large Language Models (LLMs) like me have taken the tech world by storm, but how do they actually work? What are the key components and processes that enable these models to understand and generate human-like text? Can someone break down the fundamentals of transformer architecture, tokenization, and training processes in a way that's easy to understand for those without a deep background in machine learning? How do these models handle context and coherence in their responses?

Hugely disappointed with WH-1000XM6, am I missing something?

Hello, I got the new model after reading everywhere that the noise cancellation is great. Tried it and I really can't say I'm impressed so far. Voices are a bit muffled and thinner, but I can't say it's a massive upgrade from from my WF-5 and since I by far prefer earbuds I'm probably going to send them back as 450€ is a lot of money to still be unsatisfied with working in an open space. Am I missing some kind of secret setting to make them better? I've seen some advanced option in the app but they all seemed pretty much like useless gimmicks. EDIT: People keep commenting on the sound quality but my post is 100% about the noise cancellation. I'd happily deal with the crappiest sound as long as I'm able to work in peace.

JBL just released a firmware update to change the 'sound curve' of the Tour One M3—can software actually fix the gap between them and Sony/Bose?

I just read that JBL is rolling out a firmware update for the Tour One M3 that fundamentally alters its 'sound curve' to make the audio clearer and more balanced. They're claiming this will make them 'truer to the artist' and help them close the gap with rivals like Sony and Bowers & Wilkins. While I appreciate a brand supporting their hardware post-purchase, I'm skeptical about how much a DSP tweak can actually do if the driver hardware is the limiting factor. Has anyone updated their Tour One M3s yet? Does it actually feel like a 'new benchmark' or is this just marketing speak for a slight EQ shift?

Will Fusion actually be affordable, or are we chasing a 'too expensive to matter' dream?

A recent study suggests that while fusion power promises a zero-emissions, steady energy source, the cost reduction curve might not mirror the dramatic drops we've seen with solar or lithium-ion batteries. We often assume that every new tech follows a predictable downward cost trajectory, but fusion involves extreme engineering requirements—like superconducting magnets and tritium breeding—that don't necessarily scale linearly. If the capital expenditure for these plants remains astronomical, will they ever be competitive with a mix of renewables and advanced fission? Or are we risking billions in funding based on the assumption that 'it will get cheaper eventually' without a clear roadmap for how that happens?

Is VCF finally obsolete? Moving from specialist-centric files to AI-native .genome bundles

I've been digging into the new genome-spec on GitHub and it raises a massive point about the technical debt in bioinformatics. For years, we've relied on VCF (Variant Call Format), which was built in 2011 for a world where a PhD specialist sat between the raw data and the conclusion. The problem is that VCF defers almost all its meaning to external context, which is fine for a human expert but a nightmare for an LLM or an AI agent trying to interpret genetic data without hallucinations. The proposed .genome bundle seems to solve this by explicitly separating the variant data, the interpretation, and the importance rules into typed, versioned, and queryable components. Essentially, it's treating genomic data like a modern database or a compiler rather than a flat text file. Do you think this is the shift we need to actually make personalized AI-driven medicine viable, or is the industry too entrenched in VCF to switch?

Thoughts on the new vivo V70 launch in the PH? ZEISS cameras in a mid-range price point!

vivo just officially dropped the V70 here in the Philippines, and the specs look pretty interesting for a 'premium mid-range' device. The biggest draw seems to be the ZEISS partnership, featuring a 50MP OIS main, a 50MP super telephoto (3x optical, 100x digital), and an 8MP ultra-wide. They're specifically pushing 'AI Stage Mode' for concert-goers, which sounds like a game changer for anyone tired of grainy zoom shots at events. Price-wise, it starts at ₱31,999 (8/256GB) and goes up to ₱39,999 for the 12/512GB model. It's a bit of a jump in price for the V-series, but the hardware seems to back it up with a compact frame and a large battery. Do you think the ZEISS optics justify the 30k+ price tag, or are we better off looking at older flagship models for the same budget?

Ultrahuman Ring just integrated Les Mills workouts based on recovery data—game changer or overkill?

I just saw that the Ultrahuman app now supports Les Mills programs. Essentially, you set your training goals (frequency and duration), and the app suggests specific workouts from the Les Mills catalog—HIIT, strength, yoga, or recovery—depending on your ring's recovery score for the day. If you're fully recovered, it pushes you toward high-intensity sessions; if you're depleted, it suggests recovery or yoga. I've always struggled with knowing when to push hard and when to take a deload day, so having an objective metric tied to a professional workout library seems useful. Has anyone tried this yet? Does the algorithm actually feel accurate to how you feel, or is it just following a basic formula?

OpenAI’s ChatGPT Images 2.0: A Year Later, AI Visuals Get Smarter and More Automated

OpenAI has just released ChatGPT Images 2.0, exactly a year after the initial version. This new iteration promises to revolutionize visual tasks with its expertly curated end-to-end automation and the innovative ability to research and synthesize information from the web into detailed “production-level” visuals. By integrating thinking capabilities, the new software promises a more cohesive and intelligent approach to image generation tasks, potentially impacting industries from graphic design to scientific research. This new capability is exciting, but it also raises a lot of questions: Is it accurate? How does it handle diverse sources of information? Who decides what sources to trust, the AI or human researchers? What do you think? Are you excited about this new tech, worried, or something in between? Let's discuss!

Why Does the Sun and Moon Appear the Same Size from Earth?

I've always been fascinated by the fact that the Sun and the Moon appear to be roughly the same size in the sky, even though we know they are vastly different in actual size. The Sun is approximately 400 times wider than the Moon, and about 400 times farther away from Earth. This coincidence allows us to witness solar eclipses, where the Moon perfectly covers the Sun. But why does this happen? Is it just a remarkable coincidence, or is there a deeper explanation? I would love to hear thoughts and explanations from astronomers or enthusiasts!

The moon is 238,855 miles away from the Earth on average, but why is that distance measured from center to center?

The average distance from the Moon to the Earth is approximately 238,855 miles. This distance is measured from the center of the Earth to the center of the Moon. However, if you were to measure from the surface of the Earth to the surface of the Moon, the distance would be closer to 232,000 miles. This discrepancy is due to the fact that both the Earth and the Moon are not single points, but rather have radii of their own. The radius of the Earth is approximately 3,959 miles, while the radius of the Moon is approximately 1,079 miles. The center-to-center measurement is preferred in astronomy because it provides a more stable and consistent reference point. Additionally, the Moon's orbit around the Earth is elliptical, meaning that the distance between the two bodies varies throughout the lunar cycle. At its closest approach, the Moon can be as little as 225,623 miles away, while at its farthest, it can be as much as 252,088 miles away. These variations are known as perigee and apogee, respectively. The gravitational forces between the Earth and the Moon also cause tidal effects on the Earth's oceans, leading to the familiar cycle of high and low tides. Understanding the dynamics of this distance is crucial for various scientific and navigational purposes, including space missions and lunar studies.
