I've been prescribed Acyclovir 5% Ointment for my recurring cold sores, and I'm curious to know if anyone else has used it? Has it worked for you, and how long did it take to see results? I've been applying it twice a day as directed, but I'm not sure if I should expect to see improvement within a few days or if it might take longer. Also, I've read about some potential side effects like skin irritation, but I'm still wondering about the severity and frequency of these. Have any of you experienced them? I'd love to hear any tips or advice you might have—whether it's about application, managing side effects, or anything else related to this treatment. Thanks in advance!

Yup, it's a great treatment! You can even use it proactively if you have warning signs before a breakout. I've started using it as soon as I feel the tingle and it's never gotten worse.

It's worth noting that Acyclovir is not a cure but it should significantly reduce the amount of virus you're spreading. I think the ointment is more about making the viral load less severe, and making the viral suppression less exhausting on your immune system. I've had good results, I think it makes a big difference in how long sores last.

The side effects are pretty terrible. If you get any itching or redness, I recommend stopping it immediately. I would also recommend talking to your doctor, because it's possible there are other options available to you. It's weird that something this common has such strong side effects.

My doctor told me to let it sit for a few minutes before getting dressed, apply it before bed. You won't feel much in the morning.

Burning or stinging is normal right after you apply it, but it's nothing to worry about. It will go away in a few minutes. I always go ahead and apply it before bed so I don't feel anything during the night. Otherwise I will have to go to bed with it on my face!

Just finished my first treatment. It did exactly what it was supposed to, but I’d recommend getting something to help with the pain.

This has been a game changer for me. I used to get outbreaks every 2-3 months and now it’s only been once in 2 years. It's really helped out with my anxiety, too. But you will want to avoid putting it on other skin because it can cause too much irritation.

I've used Acyclovir 5% Ointment before, and it really helped reduce the healing time for my cold sores. It took about 5-7 days to completely heal, which was much faster than my previous outbreaks. Just make sure to apply it as soon as you feel a tingle or see a sore starting to form. Oh and try not to overdo the length of the treatment, I've heard that can make them more resistant.

I had a bad reaction to Acyclovir 5% Ointment. I couldn't handle the burning and itching at all. I stopped using it and went back to my doctor. I didn't notice any rash or blotchiness, but it was very uncomfortable. So keep an eye out for your side effects and see your doctor if they get too bad.

I have a friend who used this for genital herpes and she had a similar experience, much faster healing time. She said it was way better than the pills she was taking in the past. Just be careful applying it to sensitive areas though.
