I've been researching Sodium Bicarbonate for a family member. They were told this would help balance acid levels in their blood. It seems like a straightforward treatment, but I'm nervous about the potential side effects. I read that it can cause muscle spasms, trouble breathing, and even tissue damage if the IV leaks. Has anyone had personal experience with this? What was it like? Anything I should be sure to mention to the medical team? Also, how do they usually monitor for side effects? Is it common for people to feel better quickly or does it take a while?

Oh, man. I got this when I was in the hospital a few years ago. I knew something was up when I got a bit itchy and had trouble breathing. I immediately told the nurse and she was very concerned and alerted the doctors right away. It turned out it was a reaction to the sodium bicarbonate. It was scary at the moment, but I was fine after the doctors administered different medication.

I'm glad my nausea did not get worse. I felt pretty terrible when I first got the treatment, so I was worried about that. My main worry was the IV leaking and causing tissue damage. It didn't—but I was glad they checked on it every couple of minutes.

I don't know about that but I do know my grandma had to have this treatment once. I remember the nurse saying it was really important to keep an eye on the infusion site. I got a bit worried about the muscle spasms, but grandma didn't experience any of that. She did seem a bit irritable afterwards, but the doc said that was normal and went away after a few hours.

I feel like this is a good option for people with severe cases of acidosis. But be careful. It's good to know the risks before the procedure. Some of the side effects like muscle spasms and breathing difficulties are scary. But it's also good to know that the IV leak could cause tissue damage.
