I've been scheduled for a CT scan where they'll be using Omnipaque 350mg/ml Inj, 150ml, which contains Iohexol. I've heard that while it helps make the blood vessels and organs show up better on the images, it can have some pretty severe side effects. I'm a bit anxious – without a deep Google dive, what should I do to be prepared? How many people have dealt with serious reactions, what did you do, and when did you know to act? I understand allergic reactions can be very bad. Are the odds of this really low? Did anyone have something like an allergic reaction that was not severe, but that made them afraid?

I had a really bad gut reaction to the liquid formulation of Omnipaque. I felt nauseous for a couple of days after. I had a headache too. But after a few days, I was fine. Just take it easy and rest. I didn’t need to go to a hospital or anything.

I've heard that some people can get a burning or tingling sensation after spinal injections. Not fun. But again, rare. I had a friend who had a spinal injection and said it was over in my second before they were done with the scan. Just make sure you communicate with your healthcare provider about any concerns.

I had a tough time after being injected with Omnipaque. I woke up post-scan with itchy skin and felt like I couldn't breathe. Turns out I was having an allergic reaction. Got to the ER quick and they gave me antihistamines. It was scary, but the doctors assured me it's not uncommon. Just make sure you're at a facility where they can handle reactions quickly.

Isn't it amazing how this dye makes everything show up so clearly on the scans? It's like magic!

It's worth noting that you should be well-hydrated before the scan. Drink plenty of water to help flush the dye out of your system faster. And make sure to ask your doctor about any specific precautions or steps to take depending on your health situation.

I had a friend who had a seizure after an injection but that is so rare. But I still worry when I have to go for the scans. I've had a lot less trouble than people describe.

Missed my appointment when I had to get better. I was surprised to see that it was the dye causing my dizziness. I thought it was just from being nervous about the scan.

A friend of mine had a really bad reaction to Omnipaque. She started having trouble breathing and her face swelled up. They had to give her emergency treatment. It's rare, but it happens. Just make sure you're in a safe environment where they can handle any emergencies. And tell the doctor about any allergies you have. Get the doctor on your side, get all the information you can - that's the way to go.
