I recently started taking Methenamine Mandelate 1000mg Tabs to prevent urinary tract infections. The medication works by releasing formaldehyde in the urine to kill bacteria, but it requires your urine to be acidic for it to work properly. I've read about some serious side effects and also some common ones like upset stomach. I'm curious if anyone else has taken this medication, and if so, what was your experience like? Did you have any side effects? What steps did you take to keep your urine acidic for the medication to work?

How long do you have to take this before you notice an improvement? I've been taking it for a week and I'm not sure if it's working.

My doctor told me to take a vitamin C supplement to help keep my urine acidic. That seemed to work well for me.

If you're experiencing any of these side effects, just go see your doctor. No need to suffer through it if it's making you miserable.

Just curious, does this actually eliminate the bacteria or just stop it from multiplying?

I switched to a different medication because of the side effects and the diet restrictions. Just wasn't worth it for me.

I've been on this for a few months. It's been great for preventing UTIs, but I do make sure to drink plenty of cranberry juice to keep my urine acidic. No serious side effects so far, just the occasional upset stomach.

I've had good luck with this one, so far. I do have to monitor what I eat a bit more than usual, but it's not too bad.
