I was prescribed Santyl 250u/gm Ointment (Collagenase) for a persistent wound on my leg. The doctor said it would help break down the dead tissue to promote better healing but didn't give much detail about it. Has anyone else used this? How effective is it in your experience? I'm trying to understand what to expect from it. Also, I've never used an enzyme like this before, so just wondering what the application experience is like — does it burn or sting? Any tips on using it would be great.

I'd recommend using it in the morning or evening, but not both. This lets your skin rest and and recovers through the day. It's a bit annoying to have to wait for the morning to see if it works. But if you want to get the most out of your application, you should follow the advice your doctor gives you, not what you see on Reddit.

You know what? I tried this stuff once for an injured elbow and it worked like magic. I didn't even use any other ointments after a week!

I've been using it for about a month now, and it's made a big difference. I was worried about the potential side effects, but I haven't had any issues so far. Just be careful when applying it and have a friend or nurse help if you need to. It's a bit messy to apply.

Does anyone know how long it takes to see results? I've been using it for a week but haven't seen much difference yet — I hope I'm doing something wrong!

Lol, I accidentally got some on my hands while applying it. It was very gross, much more difficult to clean off my hands than my wound. The plus was I did not get any rash or itching.

Be careful. Make sure to watch for any signs of an infection. If the skin gets red and swollen but not just in the area of the wound, it could be an infection. If that happens, you should call your doctor. It might not be something you can deal with by yourself. If you're also using other medicine, like antibiotics, it might interact with this ointment.

Santyl has been a lifesaver for me. I've used it for a few wounds, and it does break down the dead tissue well. I wouldn't say it's painful, but it feels a bit strange, like a gentle burning sensation. I always follow the directions to avoid any issues. Putting it on exactly as directed makes a huge difference.

I have a few wounds on my feet, and Santyl has helped them all. I give it a week or two, and the dead skin breaks down and starts to heal. Hands down, it works for me. One caveat: your bedsheets or clothes might get stained. It's messy, but it's worth it. Just make sure not to touch the spots around your wound when you're cleaning or redressing it.
