I was prescribed Atovaquone 750mg/5ml Suspension to prevent PCP pneumonia, and I'm eager to learn from others who have taken it. How closely do you need to follow the instructions about taking it with food? Anyone experience any concerning side effects? What's your doctor's take? It seems scary, but if anyone has positive experiences or good tips, I'd love to hear them. I've read a lot about liver problems but haven't found many personal experiences online. Thanks in advance!

I don’t understand why doctors don’t make this more clear and which foods help. I tried everything from yogurt to steak but mostly just ate when I remembered which was not great. I think my body was still absorbing okay though. Has anyone had a different experience with different foods?

Taking Atovaquone was a breeze for me. No major side effects, just a bit of diarrhea. The food thing is for real though. I missed a couple of doses without food and felt the difference in absorption. My doctor explained that it has to do with how the medicine is absorbed in your body.

I'm really sorry to hear about that! What did your doctor say about why you had such a severe reaction? My doc assured me the side effects were rare but I'm still worried about them.

I took Atovaquone for a few months and didn't experience any severe side effects, but I did notice some minor ones like headaches and trouble sleeping. I found that taking it with a full meal helped a bit with the stomach discomfort. Honestly, I think it's better to deal with some minor side effects than risk getting pneumonia. The liver problems are definitely scary, but I was closely monitored by my doctor and it wasn't an issue.

Taking it with food was a lifesaver for me. My partner had to remind me consistently to take it with a full meal. I was super paranoid about the liver problems but was glad that I didn't have any major issues.

Don't forget to report any side effects to the FDA if you're having trouble. They actually have a site for it and it's worth the headache to do it.

Honestly, I had a really rough time with this. I had terrible hives and itching that made me miserable. I wish I'd known how rough the side effects could be. I actually had to switch medications after the first week because of this.

I was really worried about the side effects, but my doctor explained that taking it with food is super important and can help prevent a lot of the issues. It's definitely worth taking it with a full meal if you can manage it. I also found that keeping a food diary helped me track what worked best.
