As a newcomer to New York City, I'm struggling to find the best tools and resources to navigate the city efficiently. What are some must-have apps, websites, or local tips that have made your life easier in NYC? Specifically, I'm looking for recommendations on public transportation, dining, and local events. Any insights or personal stories are welcome!

Has anyone tried the Citymapper app? It gives you the best routes and even includes bike and walking directions. It's really handy for avoiding traffic and getting around faster.

I couldn't agree more about Yelp. It's a great resource, but also try OpenTable for restaurant reservations. It's user-friendly and has a wide range of options. And if you’re into live music, Songkick is awesome for finding concerts and festivals. Plus, it syncs with your Spotify account to recommend shows based on your taste!

New York City is too vast to explore without a good map app. I use Google Maps all the time, but Apple Maps has gotten better and gives directions for public transport. One cool thing, though, is that Google Maps has a 'Explore Nearby' feature for fun things to do around you. Both are worth a try! Lastly, if your commute involves the LIRR or Metro North, the Transit app is awesome for planning trips and real-time updates on delays and disruptions

For dining, try the reservation app Resy. It's got a lot of the same features as OpenTable, plus points for a more modern interface. And if you’re into cocktails, the app DrinkUp lists a ton of happy hours and specials in the city, citywide.

For the best local eats, Yelp is a lifesaver. You can filter by neighborhood and see reviews from other locals. Plus, the 47th St. 'Foodie' section is a hidden gem for lesser-known spots.

If you're new to the city, you gotta check out the Time Out New York. It's an awesome resource for local events, dining, and hidden gems. It even has a 'Local' tag so you avoid tourist traps.

TimeOut & Yelp are great, but don't forget local Facebook groups. Neighborhood-specific groups have the inside scoop on everything from hidden gems to community events.

Definitely check out the MTA eTix app for subway and bus fares - it's saved me so many times from buying a MetroCard!

One thing I'd add is a foldable bike from a company like Bird or Lime. I live in Manhattan and it's so much quicker and easier than taking the bus or subway. Plus, I can park anywhere and not worry about traffic jams or crowded trains.

Time Out New York is your best bet for local events. They have a calendar and lists for music, theatre, and nightlife. And the Food & Drink section is super comprehensive. Just remember to look for events tagged 'Local' - that way you can skip things that are just tourist traps:
