Dexmedetomidine (Precedex 80mcg/20ml Inj Sol): Safe or Risky in ICU and Procedures?

Interesting, I've never heard of this before. What are some other medications used for sedation?
It's a useful medication for procedural sedation, but the risk of bradycardia and hypotension can be concerning. We always have to be careful and ready to intervene if needed.
Question: Does anyone know if there are any long-term effects from using Precedex? I get confused about medications that are supposed to be safe, but then I read the list of what could occur.
I've always thought the side effects were a bit overstated. In my experience, most patients tolerate it well. It's all about monitoring and adjusting the dose accordingly.
I remember an incident where a patient was experiencing some of the severe side effects like severe headache and dizziness it was manageable after adjusting the dosage. However, I would not recommend this drug to every patient.
The side effects list is pretty long, and some of them are quite serious. I'm not sure I'd want to take it if I were in the ICU. Constipation, nausea? Getting the common side effects is a high price for the benefits we get from this sedative. What are the alternatives to Precedex?
