I've been reading about Dexmedetomidine, a sedative often used in hospitals to help patients feel calm and relaxed. It's typically given by injection and can also help with pain management. I understand it works by affecting certain signals in the brain. Has anyone here had experience with this medication, either personally or with a family member? I'm curious about the effectiveness and the side effects. The list of possible side effects is quite long, including some serious ones. It seems like it might be great for short-term use but perhaps problematic for longer periods. Any insights would be appreciated!

I had this during a procedure and it was great. Kept me calm and I didn't feel any pain. no side effects that I noticed really.

It's worth noting that Dexmedetomidine can interact with other medications, especially those that affect blood pressure or heart rate. Always check the drug interactions on any medication you're on, if you're worried.

Why isn't this medication used more widely for outpatient procedures? It seems like it would be useful for dentistry or minor surgeries, right?

My dad had to have it after a major surgery and it did the job but we had to frequently monitor him throughout for any signs of low blood pressure. There's a lot of monitoring that can be required with this drug.

I had a terrible experience with this. I woke up feeling so anxious and dizzy. Plus, I had this weird nerve sensation all over my body. It was the worst.

Dexmedetomidine is great for procedures, however, the side effects can be intense. My mom was on it and she experienced severe dizziness and even some hallucinations. She was clearly not feeling great and I think she would have preferred something else. We wish we had been informed of the risks more thoroughly.

I work in the ICU and we use Dexmedetomidine quite a bit. It's great for keeping patients sedated without using traditional sedatives like propofol or benzodiazepines. It’s often a better option because it allows for more awareness and interaction, especially for patients on ventilators. [Usual dosage is 0.2-0.7 mcg/kg/hr in adults], but it can definitely cause some issues. Hypotension and bradycardia are the most common effects. I've also had to monitor for significant respiratory depression. Always a risk when you're talking about sedatives.

I had a family member who was prescribed this and they ended up having a severe allergic reaction. It was scary, but thankfully they got immediate medical attention and were fine. It made me realize how important it is to monitor side effects closely.
