Ferrous sulfate, an iron supplement used to treat or prevent iron deficiency anemia, can have a range of side effects. While some are minor and manageable, others can be severe and potentially life-threatening. This thread seeks to discuss the various side effects of ferrous sulfate 140mg tablets, how to recognize them, and what steps to take if they occur. If you've taken these tablets, please share your experiences, whether good or bad, and any tips you might have for others.

I felt like I was having a heart attack because of ferrous sulfate, and it was just the GI issues. It was bad.

I had a terrible experience with ferrous sulfate. I started feeling really dizzy and developed a rash. Went to the ER and they told me to stop taking it immediately.

I've been taking ferrous sulfate for a few months now, and while I haven't experienced any serious side effects, dealing with constipation and diarrhea on alternate days is really tough. But I've heard that taking it with food can help.

I started taking a liquid iron supplement and it has minimal side effects, and is easy to take. I always have to remind myself to take the 140mg tablets every day, and I always forget.

Saw a lot of details in the thread about stomach cramps and similar issues, but for me fermented beverages are the issue. Then I read (on my own) that taking iron compounds with beetroot juice or carrot juice can help with iron absorption, and having less iron side effects.

Been there, done that — I switched to a slower release iron supplement that the doctor prescribed and it almost entirely stopped the GI issues. The downsides are that I forgot to take it everyday so I have to remind myself, and it's more expensive than the tablets.

Iron deficiency anemia is no joke. I've had it for years, and while ferrous sulfate has helped, the side effects can be rough. Stay hydrated, and if you feel any severe symptoms, go to the doctor ASAP.
