The flu season is around the corner, and with it comes the annual debate on whether or not to get the flu vaccine. This year, the CDC recommends the Flucelvax Quadrivalent vaccine, which protects against four different flu viruses. Unlike some other vaccines, Flucelvax is made using cell culture, meaning it doesn't contain any eggs or preservatives like thimerosal. It is given by injection and contains inactivated (killed) parts of four different flu viruses. While it won't give you the flu, it will help you fight it off if exposed later. With the flu comes a lot of questions and some misconceptions that need to be cleared up. Let's dive in and discuss what you need to know before getting vaccinated. I'm planning to get it this year, but I've heard some scary stories about side effects. What's the truth about Flucelvax's side effects, and what should I look out for? I want to know how the vaccine is made, and why is it a good idea to opt for this one?

There’s a lot of misinformation out there. The flu vaccine cannot give you the flu. It’s made with inactivated viruses, so it’s impossible. It’s just your body’s response to the vaccine.

I don’t think it's worth the risk of side effects, this flu shot contains particular ingredients that I want to avoid.

I got the Flucelvax last year and had no issues. Just a bit of soreness at the injection site and mild fatigue for a day or two. It's definitely worth it to avoid the flu.

My kid got really sick after her flu shot last year, and it left her with a fever, upset stomach, and some diarrhea. She's been vaccinated every year, but this was the only time she had major side effects. I think it's worth it to prevent the flu, but I'm a bit nervous. I read that some kids experience unusual crying. That's a bit odd, but she did cry more than usual after her shot, so I guess it's possible.

A lot of people are weak after the vaccine, but they can do one or two things to avoid this. Make sure you stay hydrated and get enough vitamins. This is especially true if you think you could be vitamin deficient. Vitamin C in particular has been linked to fighting off diseases.

Did you know that you can't get a live vaccine if you are allergic to eggs? This is good for me because I am allergic to eggs, but I can still get the vaccine. I had a mild headache for a day, but it was nothing serious for sure

My friend had a bad reaction to the flu shot last year. She experienced severe dizziness and had to be taken to the hospital. She had all the signs of severe allergic reaction. She was lucky she wasn't allergic to the vaccine, but she still had red blisters all over her body!

I heard that some people can experience severe dizziness or fainting after the vaccine. Has anyone experienced this?

Growing up I had people telling me the vaccine was useless, but my doctor explained how it actually works. When your body is injected with a vaccine, it recognizes the dead flu virus and then learns how to make antibodies. The vaccine doesn't contain a live virus so it can't give you the flu. Antibodies are proteins that your body makes in response to foreign invaders, like viruses. The antibodies then help your immune system fight off the virus if you are ever exposed to it in the future. The vaccine can't give you the flu, so why wouldn't you get it? Everyone should get it.
