Has anyone else had serious side effects from Ferrous Sulfate 220mg/5ml Elixir?
I've been taking Ferrous Sulfate 220mg/5ml Elixir for a few weeks now to treat my anemia, and while I thought it was going well, I've started to experience some pretty severe symptoms. Besides the usual nausea, I've had some black, sticky stool which has me pretty concerned. Has anyone else dealt with this? Should I seek medical advice immediately or is there a way to manage these symptoms? I've done some reading and I think it's urgent, but I want to hear from some real experiences. I'm also a bit tired of the green stool which is apparently a common side effect. I just want to know if anyone else has gone through this and what their doctor told them to do.

I had really bad stomach cramps and nausea with this stuff. I ended up switching to a different iron supplement and it’s been much better. The constipation was awful too.
I had a similar problem when I started taking iron pills. I switched to a different brand and it helped. I think the brand can make a difference, so maybe talk to your doctor about trying something different if the side effects are too bad..
I've been on this for months and haven't had any issues at all. I can't stand the taste, though! I just mix it with a bit of juice to make it go down easier. I've heard the staining is real, so I make sure to brush my teeth after taking it.
My doc told me that the side effects can be really bad for some people, so I had to be careful. I didn't have any black stools but I did have some cramps. I just had to take it with food and drink plenty of water. It sucked but it's better than being low on iron.
Definitely call your doctor. Bloody stools are not normal and can be a serious sign of internal bleeding. Don't mess around with that stuff.
Hope you feel better soon! Iron supplements can be tricky, but they're worth it if they help with the anemia. Just make sure to stay hydrated and listen to your body.
I had a bad allergy and had to stop taking it. The hives were insane and my throat started to close up. I was scared, I am actually still a little afraid of taking iron supplements after that. I spoke to my doctor and they switched me to a different supplement. This is a serious medication and everyone should be aware of the side effects before using it.
I’m sorry you’re dealing with this. I had similar issues, but my doctor recommended taking it with food and lots of water and it really helped. For the stools, it could just be the iron, but any large changes in stool should be checked out.
I had the green stool too—my doctor said it was just the iron and nothing to worry about. But black stools? That's serious. You need to call your doctor right away. You could be having an internal bleed.
