Hey everyone, I'm considering getting the Varivax vaccine for my kid, but I'm a bit worried about the potential side effects. Has anyone here had Varivax and experienced any serious issues? I've read about some severe reactions like shingles or allergic reactions, and it's got me a bit spooked. Any insights or experiences would be greatly appreciated! Also, how common are the mild side effects like fever or fussiness? Thanks in advance!

I'm a nurse and I can tell you that while the side effects are possible, they are rare especially in children. Parents often worry more than they should but the vaccine is generally considered safe. If you have any questions, talk to your doctor- they can give you the most accurate information for your specific situation.

I had a friend who got shingles after getting Varivax. It was horrible. I'm not sure if it was caused by the vaccine or not, but it was scary. I think it's important to weigh the risks and benefits. The worst part is doing the math and not being able to trust the stats. I'm a physicist, so I should be good at math but this is hard to nail down.

I got Varivax for my daughter last year, and she had no issues at all. No fever, no fussiness, nothing. I would say the 20 seconds of pain from the injection was worth it to not worry about her getting chickenpox, but yeah, I would say the pros outweigh the cons.

I worked at a clinic and we gave out a lot of Varivax. Most kids had mild reactions but it was rare to see anything serious. Even so, I think the risk of chickenpox is worse than any reaction to the vaccine. I had chickenpox as a kid and it was miserable. Lots of itching and discomfort, and I know people who had it much worse. It's definitely worth getting vaccinated!
