I've been prescribed Guaifenesin and Codeine Syrup (100mg-10mg/5ml) for a persistent cough and chest congestion. The doctor says it's a combination of guaifenesin to thin out the mucus and codeine to control the cough. My concern is the potential side effects, especially the more serious ones. Do any of you have any experience with this medication and is it any good? I've heard scary stories about codeine, and I don't want to take anything that can make me dependent and cause some serious side effects. It makes me nervous.

I've taken it a few times and it worked well for my cough. Just be careful with the dosing—it can make you really drowsy. I didn't experience any of the serious side effects, but I did get a bit constipated.

I think everyone is overreacting. I've taken it a few times and never had any issues. Just follow the instructions and you'll be fine. This is a great medicine and it will calm the cough. It was the first thing that actually made my school year bearable.

I had a friend who ended up in the hospital with some serious breathing problems after taking this. It's not worth the risk for me. Talk to your doctor about other options.

I had a really bad reaction to this stuff. My throat started feeling tight, and I had a lot of trouble breathing. Went to the ER, and they said it was an allergic reaction. Be careful, man.
