I wish this was a more straightforward drug but I remember the first time I took it for my C. diff infection, I was pretty nervous. The side effects can be awful if you’re not careful. I got some mild skin rashes which my doctor told me was due to allergies. I drank plenty of fluids and kept taking my Prolonged capsules as advised and everything went fine.
I went through the same thing last year and my main tip is to be patient. Don’t expect immediate results. I took the Vancocin and the diarrhea got worse for a bit before finally clearing up. Stomach pain and headaches were common too. My doctor explained that C. diff can be a tricky infection to treat, so patience is key. It was finally clearing up around the time the doctor said it would.
I work in a hospital and have seen patients on Vancocin. It’s tough, but it’s often the only thing that works for severe C. diff. Stay in touch with your healthcare provider and report any unusual symptoms immediately.
