I've been struggling with very dry, scaly skin on my elbows and knees for a while now. I recently picked up some Ammonium Lac 12% Cream and I'm hoping it can help soften and moisturize these areas. Has anyone else used this cream? I'd love to hear about your experiences, both good and bad. How long did it take to see improvements? Did you experience any side effects like irritation or burning? Any tips on how to apply it for best results? I've read that it can cause allergic reactions in rare cases, so I'm a bit nervous about that. How can I minimize the risk?

I tried it, but I found that a heavy moisturizer with urea worked just as well and didn't sting.

Why do they have to make these things with so much ammonia? I've never had good luck with any.

I wish someone would make a version of this that doesn't stink. It works great but that smell...

I'm a nurse and I can tell you that this is a combination of lactic acid and ammonium. The lactic acid exfoliates and the ammonium hydrates. If you have sensitive skin, you might want to skip it—especially if you have eczema or rosacea. But if you have very dry or tough skin, it should work well.
