I've recently been prescribed Cholestyramine Light Powder to help manage my high cholesterol levels. The doctor explained that it works by binding to bile acids in the intestines, which forces the liver to use more cholesterol to produce new bile acids, thereby lowering my 'bad' cholesterol (LDL-C). I've also heard it can help with itching caused by certain liver conditions. I'm curious to know if anyone else has tried this medication and what their experience has been like. I'm especially interested in hearing about any side effects people may have encountered. The potential side effects listed are quite daunting, but I'm hoping that with proper management, they can be minimized. If you've found any helpful strategies to manage these side effects, I'd love to hear them. Additionally, how does this powder work in practice? Is it as simple as mixing it with water? Any advice on its usage would be greatly appreciated.

I had severe stomach pain and bloating when I started taking it, but my doctor had me take a stool softener which helped a lot. Just make sure you talk to your doctor about any issues you have.

I take it with orange juice. It's not great, but it’s better than water. After a while, you get used to it. Just remember to mix it well because the powder doesn't dissolve completely. Otherwise, it could clog your intestines.

I took it for a while and it worked well, but I hated the texture. Plus, I had to get used to taking it with juice and not water and mix it in a blender. Be prepared for that.

I had a terrible allergic reaction to this stuff. Went to the ER with hives and trouble breathing. Not worth the risk for me.

I've been on Cholestyramine for a few months now. It's not the most pleasant thing to take, but it has helped lower my cholesterol. The constipation was a bit of an issue at first, but increasing my fiber intake and drinking more water has helped a lot. Definitely worth it for the health benefits.

I've found that taking Cholestyramine with a high-fiber drink like Metamucil helps with the constipation. It's not ideal, but it's manageable.

Sounds rough. How do you mix it? Does it taste bad?

I was really nervous about taking this because of the side effects, but I've had none so far. Just make sure you drink plenty of water and eat a lot of fiber.

Yeah, make sure you stir it REALLY well. I ended up with chunks the first few times. Also, if you get a bad batch, it's very gritty. Mine was so bad I complained to the pharmacy and they replaced it.

I had no idea this stuff could help with itching from liver issues. I might bring it up with my doctor.
