I've been dealing with cold sores for years, and my doctor recently prescribed Acyclovir 5% Ointment. I've heard mixed reviews about its effectiveness and side effects. Has anyone else used this ointment? I'd love to hear about your experiences, both positive and negative. Specifically, I'm curious about how quickly it worked, if it reduced pain, and any side effects you might have encountered. Did you experience any of the more severe side effects mentioned in the warning? Thanks in advance for sharing!

I’ve had great success with Acyclovir. I usually get cold sores when I'm stressed or sick. Whenever I feel one coming on, I start using the ointment right away. It always works for me, and the side effects are minimal–just a bit of stinging, which fades quickly. I think it’s my best option, but I'm lucky enough to not have any severe reactions to it.

Have you tried applying it with a cotton swab? It's been working well for me and keeping everything cleaner.

I tried Acyclovir, and it worked well for me too. It healed my cold sores faster than anything else I've tried. I didn't have any major side effects, just a bit of itching and slight irritation around the area I applied it.

Be careful with this stuff! I didn't realize how important it is to wash your hands before and after applying it. I ended up with a small rash on my hand from not washing it well enough. It's a bit of a hassle, but it's worth it to avoid infection.

Interesting thread. I wonder if there are any alternatives for those who can't tolerate Acyclovir? I know some people can't use it due to allergies or other issues. Anyone have recommendations?

I had a really bad reaction to Acyclovir. I got hives and had trouble breathing. I had to go to the ER. It was terrifying, so I won't be using it again. I'd advise anyone who experiences any kind of allergic reaction to seek medical help immediately. My doctor switched me to something else, and it's been fine so far. I wish I would've started with something less likely to cause a severe reaction.

I only needed to use Acyclovir a few times. It worked well, but I had some itching. I'm glad it healed my cold sores quickly though.
