I recently received a prescription for Bacitracin/polymyx Ophthoint 3.5gm to treat a bacterial eye infection. Since I'm new to eye medications, I had a few questions. First, I didn't realize this ointment contains two different antibiotics, bacitracin and polymyxin B. It takes a little while to apply, especially when you have all the other steps to consider before it goes on. Does anyone have any tips for applying it? I've also been a bit concerned about the potential side effects. The urgent side effects especially scare me, like changes in eyesight or severe eye irritation, but I'm not sure what “severe” looks like. I did see that I should call the FDA if I notice any side effects, but does anyone else have experience with this stuff? If it helps, I know it's used on people who have had a corneal transplant. I wonder, since it is an antibiotic, can we use it to treat other eye issues? I hope I’m not wasting anyone’s time here.

I had to use this for a while after a minor eye surgery. The ointment works great, but it can make your vision a bit blurry for a while after application. Nothing to worry about, but it's good to be prepared. I used to wipe off the ointment with warm water and a towel before my vision went back to normal.

I've used this before and it worked great for my eye infection. Just be careful not to get any in your mouth or eyes - awkward as it sounds, it happens. I was very nervous about the side effects too, but my doctor assured me they are rare. If it helps, make sure to sterilize your hands before application.

Be careful with this stuff. You don't want to mess around with your eyes.

I've never had issues with side effects, but I've seen someone who did. These ointments can make you feel very itchy and inflamed. It's important to be aware of these symptoms and call your doctor.

I think it's always worth the risk for something as important as your eyes. With that said, it made me very nervous until my doctor assured me that the risks are minimal and you have to follow the instructions the exact way it is prescribed.

Just be sure to follow the instructions carefully. I made sure to apply it exactly as my doctor told me, and it cleared up my infection in no time. I mixed it with saline eye drops for the instructions to go through.

Severe eye irritation is no joke. If your eyes start to feel super uncomfortable or you notice any changes in your vision while using it, do not wait. Call your doctor right away.

I had a bad reaction to this. I ended up with hives and had to stop using it. Luckily, my doctor switched me to a different antibiotic, but it was scary at first. If you experience any allergic reactions, definitely seek medical attention immediately. You should also report it to the FDA. They take this stuff very seriously.
