I'm trying to learn more about Cervidil before my OB/GYN decides whether to use it to help start or speed up labor. It's described as a small, flat insert placed into the vagina to help prepare your cervix for labor. It contains a medicine called dinoprostone, which is a natural substance in your body that helps soften and open the cervix and can also start contractions. I've heard mixed reviews and am curious about others' experiences. It could be a game-changer in my delivery journey, but I want to make sure I'm well-informed and prepared. Some of the side effects can be scary. Has anyone experienced them?

I used Cervidil for both of my inductions and it worked like a charm. First time I was 37 weeks and I had to be induced because I had a high risk pregnancy with preeclampsia. It was pretty uncomfortable but not too bad. I started having contractions within 2 hours of being inserted. Second time, I was a day post my estimated due date and my water broke. I was at the hospital and they inserted cervidil to get things going. I was fully dilated from it within a few hours. Only side effects I had were a bit of diarrhea and vomiting. My contractions came on pretty strong and fast. It was an intense experience, but I'd do it again if I had to.

I asked my doctor to avoid Cervidil for my next baby. I think Cervidil is a big company and doctors are just trying to make a buck. I would rather have my doctors just jump right into Pitocin.

I had to have a c-section because the baby was breech so I didn't get to experience Cervidil, my doctor suggested it and I went through my delivery process knowing that I could use it afterwards. I had already gotten the epidural and the doctor did the c-section and then asked me to stay in the hospital for another day to see if I could labor. I didn't have side effects and I got to experience my contractions. The biggest thing I realized was the cervidil contractions didn't hurt and were different from the Pitocin contractions.

I had a completely different experience with Cervidil. I was induced at 39 weeks and they gave me Cervidil first thing in the morning. After the insertion, I didn't feel much of anything. After 12 hours, the Cervidil was removed but I still didn't have contractions, so they gave me Pitocin. The contractions came on immediately and were extremely painful. I ended up getting an epidural because I couldn't handle the pain. I would probably opt to try a different method of induction in the future if possible.

That's scary. How did you know you had the side effects from Cervidil and not just from labor?

I did a lot of research on Cyotec vs. Cervidil before I went with Cervidil. I heard stories of it causing really bad side effects and with Cervidil, my doctor said I would only have minor ones. Cervidil is a vaginal insert that releases the medicine slowly. Cyotec is a pill you place in your vagina and it can dissolve and cause the medicine to release into your bloodstream at once causing a lot of side effects. I think the chance of side effects is higher with Cyotec.

I had a reaction to Cervidil for my first child and I was worried about trying it for my second. My doctor was surprised that I was concerned about using it again after I had a bad experience. He said, 'We can try it and if you have problems, I can stop it and we can try something else. Which is what happened. I had a reaction and we moved on to Pitocin. The best part was that I didn't have to wait 12 hours for it to kick in. I had contractions within an hour.

I can't believe doctors are putting pregnant women through this much pain. I had Cervidil and my contractions were barely noticeable... It was so much easier than I thought it was going to be.

If you're worried about side effects, make sure your doctor knows. I had a really bad reaction to Cervidil - I had all of the urgent side effects including stomach pain and changes to vision. I went to the ER and had to get everything stopped.

Interesting, I'm glad to hear that both of you had success. I was wondering if anyone can explain the difference between Cervidil and Cyotec. I know that Cyotec can cause really bad stomach pain and diarrhea for some people. Wondering if Cervidil is the same.
