I've been prescribed Cetacaine 2-2-14% Topical Anesthetic for a minor dental procedure, and I'm a bit nervous about it. It contains benzocaine, butamben, and tetracaine, which are all numbing agents. I've read that it can cause some serious side effects, like methemoglobinemia, which sounds scary. Has anyone used this before? What was your experience like? Were there any side effects? I want to be prepared and know what to expect.

Cetacaine is great for procedures but you have to be careful with the dose. My dentist used it for a root canal and a small amount went on my tongue. I felt like I had a chemical burn on my tongue for a few days afterward. I ended up with a canker sore from it. Afterwards I always made sure to rinse my mouth out well before using it. If I knew better before, I would have just asked the dentist to use it only on the tooth needing work, not the areas around it. Stick to very close to where the work is being done. Also, the taste is really nasty—like having a mouthful of band-aids.

Dental work sounds like torture, even with Cetacaine.

I've never heard of Cetacaine before. I'll stick to novocaine. Thanks for the heads up though.

Methemoglobinemia is a condition where the blood doesn't carry oxygen properly. It can be caused by certain medications, including topical anesthetics like Cetacaine. Symptoms include blue or gray skin, headache, and shortness of breath. If you experience any of these, seek medical attention immediately. I'd suggest having someone with you when you use it, just in case.

I used Cetacaine for a dental procedure and it worked great! No side effects for me. Just a little tingling sensation.

Don't forget to report any side effects to the FDA if you experience them. Even if they seem minor, it's important to track these things.

Cetacaine contains multiple numbing agents which can be helpful for longer procedures. It also contains a vasoconstrictor to reduce bleeding and swelling. I’ve used it for a gum graft and it worked great. Took my dentist only 10 minutes. But be careful, if you have a history of heart issues, you might want to check with your doctor before using it. As a doctor in my family warned me that it can cause other issues. I've had no issues with it, but better to be safe, right?

I've used it for a tonsillectomy and it works wonders. It numbs the throat really well and it didn't bother me at all. Just make sure you are not allergic to any of the ingredients.

I've heard this can cause methemoglobinemia. That's a serious condition, right?

Be careful with Cetacaine. I had a severe allergic reaction last time I used it. Swelling, hives, the works. Had to go to the ER. I'd avoid if possible.
