I've been prescribed Phenylephrine rectal suppositories for my hemorrhoids, a common issue with a lot of people. I was wondering if anyone's tried these and what their experience was like? Are the side effects as bad as they sound? Or is it worth the relief in the short term? How long do they actually take to work? And what precautions would you recommend? I really want some peace of mind before I start using them.

I had rashes after using them. I think my body might be allergic to them. It's pretty scary at first. I read that hives and rashes are one of the signs..

I've only heard bad things about these. Maybe that is due to user error. Just curious, what is the proper way to apply them? It's kind of embarrassing to ask your doctor—is there a trick to it?

Have any of you tried the suppositories for the first time? I bought some over the counter and am going to try them tonight. Hoping for the best. For once, I want to be optimistic about my hemorrhoids!

I found they were better than creams. Kept the area numb so I didn’t scratch or itch as much. Definitely worth the trouble. I know they take a bit of getting used to, but it was really helpful for me.

I've used them before, worked like a charm! Relief was near instant, and side effects were minimal. Just a little itchiness at first but nothing too bad.

They're not for everyone. I was actually surprised by how effective the suppositories were. I got them over the counter for my partner who had horrible bad flare ups. Do your research! They really do work for some people.

I’ve had terrible side effects. Swelling in my face and throat. I had to go to the ER. I’m allergic to them apparently, so be careful.

Try to avoid straining—follow your doctor’s advice on diet or stools. I've found that adding more fiber to my diet has really helped. It's a pretty cheap and easy preventative measure. I've had success with Metamucil—it's a great way to ensure regularity. I've also cut back on sitting for long periods (I work from home and tend to sit for hours without realizing it) and I've actually found a lot of relief that way.

I can't believe we can't get a clear list of side effects...I always worry about these things. I had a bad experience with rectal bleeding. I'm sure I'll have to deal with hemorrhoids at some point, but I wish there was a better option.

I got mine online...shouldn't have done that. It was fake ingredients—and it burned so bad. I had to go to the hospital because I couldn't tell if it was real or not. Don't be like me.
