Hey y'all, I just got admitted for dehydration and was given 150ml of Sodium Chloride 0.9% Injection. I’ve had other IVs before but this one really pinches more than the others. Also, I've read online that some people get side effects, even serious ones. I haven’t noticed any yet but I'm wondering if anyone else has had reactions to this? How can I make sure I’m not in the danger zone? What should I look out for to avoid other people's nightmare stories coming true?

I had this after a pretty bad bout of food poisoning, and it was actually surprisingly soothing. It felt like the saline was literally washing away the toxins, though I’m sure it wasn’t quite that dramatic. But if you’re really concerned, ask your doctor about switching to Lactated Ringer’s Solution.

I had a friend who had a serious allergic reaction to sodium chloride. I have to say, it was scary. He developed a rash and had trouble breathing. Make sure your doctor is nearby and be careful.

It pinches because the NaCl solution can cause a bit of irritation. Sometimes, changing the rate of infusion or adjusting the IV site can make it more comfortable. I’ve had the opposite issue — I’ve experienced itchiness more than pain.

Normal saline is generally safe, but keep an eye out for any signs of an allergic reaction or fluid imbalance. I've had it a few times and it's always been fine, but I know someone who had a mild allergic reaction. If you notice anything unusual, talk to your doctor right away. Report side effects to the FDA if they seem serious.

I'm a nurse and the pinch you're feeling is just your veins reacting to the saline. It’s normal.

yikes, just be careful and watch for swelling, redness and pain or obviously anything mentioned in OP
