I've heard some scary things about the morning after pill, but I can't tell if it's overblown or if I've got cause for concern. I understand it's an emergency contraceptive pill, it works by stopping the release of an egg and it's most effective the sooner you take it. I was wondering how common the severe side effects are? The whole allergic reaction thing is freaking me out. And how do I deal with the changes in my period? Is it just going to disrupt it or is it going to be some other crazy thing?_help

I think you're overthinking it. The morning after pill doesn't have any long-term effects. It won't affect your fertility. The worst that can happen is that you get some minor side effects. You're going to be fine. Consider the risk to your body vs. the risk of an unwanted pregnancy. If you had unprotected sex, then you should consider both options. It's better to be prepared for every scenario.

Have you actually taken it before? I'm asking because I am 100% sure that if you have read the pamphlet, you would know that you don't need to call the ER. You would just go to the hospital and get help. Taking it with a meal can help reduce nausea, and you can always take an antacid if you're worried about stomach issues. Most side effects are minor., but everyone's body reacts differently. You do need to pay attention to severe side effects, especially the allergic reactions.

Why are you so concerned about the allergic reaction? If it's that bad, just don't use it. The pill is optional. Go to the pharmacy, and ask about other options. They can provide you with alternatives or advice. Don't be so dramatic about it. You need to calm down and breathe.

I had a terrible experience with it. I had severe stomach pain and it felt like my whole body was rejecting the pill. I had to call emergency services. I was worried about being allergic to it. I thought it was just anxiety. It turned out that allergies are a possible reaction but rare. You have to take it seriously, though. Lots of people are fine, but others are not so lucky. You've got to stay safe.

I didn't know about these side effects. Does anyone know if it can cause long-term effects? I'm worried about my fertility. I don't want to mess up my reproductive system.

Seriously, though, how bad are the changes in your menstrual period? Does it mess up your cycle or what? I've heard it can cause really heavy bleeding. I don't want to deal with that.

Yeah, I took Levonorgestrel in high school and it had zero effect. If you're still nervous, try a slower method. Talk to your doctor about other contraceptive options. You might want to consider an IUD or the pill.

I’ve taken the morning-after pill a handful of times, and while it doesn't make your period normal, it doesn't cause anything too extreme either. It may make your period earlier and it might be heavier but it should return to normal after the next cycle or two. The most important thing is to take it as soon as possible after unprotected sex. Another thing to note is that it's not a solution for anything else but a one-time use. It's a really good safety net. You should really consider other birth control methods too.
