I just got prescribed Sodium Chloride 0.9% with 20meq KCL IV drip. I have never had an IV before and this is all new to me. I know it's used to replace fluids and electrolytes, but I'm curious about the experience, any potential side effects, and how long it usually takes. Any insights or personal experiences would be greatly appreciated!

It’s weird how they just stick a needle in your arm and hook you up to a bag of fluids. But it works! Just be careful with the KCL, too much can have side effects

IV drips can be a bit uncomfortable at first, but they're usually quick. Just make sure you stay hydrated afterwards. Definitely pay attention to any side effects listed. I had one and it was totally fine.

It's a common IV solution for rehydration. Just stay still while it’s dripping. Make sure to let the medical staff know if you feel any discomfort.

Biggest advice: don't move around too much if you can. When I did it I was actually kinda bored because I had to sit still for a while. Might be a good opportunity to catch up on some TV shows.

So, can you eat and drink while getting an IV? I remember being really thirsty but someone told me you can’t eat or drink during the drip. Is that true?

Serious side effects are rare, but call your doctor if you notice anything weird. You might feel a bit tired or weak afterwards, but that's usually normal. Just watch for anything that feels like a reaction.

Don't worry, it's a pretty straightforward process. Just a few minutes of your time and you won't even notice the IV in your arm. Oh yeah, you can eat and drink.

Can you believe they'd even put salt water in your blood? Salt water? Isn't your blood saline already? I wonder what it even does? I guess it has to have the KCL in it too or else your muscles will cramp. I’m all about the KCL.
