I've been prescribed Tuxarin ER 54.3-8mg Tablets to help with my cough and allergies. It's an extended-release tablet that contains codeine and chlorpheniramine. I've read that codeine helps calm the cough and chlorpheniramine relieves allergy symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes. I'm supposed to take it every 12 hours. Does anyone have experience with this medication? How effective is it and what side effects did you experience? I'm curious about the possible side effects, especially the urgent ones like allergic reactions and serotonin syndrome. I've also noticed some people mention that extended-release formulations have a different experience than immediate-release, so I'd love to hear about that too. Thanks!

All in all, it’s a decent medication if you need relief from both cough and allergies. Just be very cautious with the side effects and how you feel. If something feels off, seek medical attention.

I found the extended-release aspect really helpful. I only had to take it twice a day, which was much easier to manage than other medications I've tried. It took a bit to kick in, but once it did, it worked well for me.

Be really careful with this medication if you're taking anything else that affects serotonin levels. I had a friend who ended up in the hospital with serotonin syndrome after combining it with an SSRI.

The constipation was brutal. Make sure you stay hydrated and maybe consider a mild stool softener if you have issues with that. Also, keep in mind that the codeine can be habit-forming, so use it responsibly.
