Life with Kidney Disease: Experiences and Tips with Sevelamer Carb 0.8gm Powder Pouches
Hey everyone, I was recently prescribed Sevelamer Carb 0.8gm Powder Pouches to manage my phosphorus levels due to kidney disease. I've heard it can be a bit tricky to deal with, and I'm looking for any advice or shared experiences from others who are using it. Does anyone have tips on the best way to mix and take these powders daily ? Does it have a bad taste? How has it affected your digestive system -constipation or diarrhea? And has anyone experienced any of the more serious side effects? I'd love to hear both the good and the bad to prepare myself for what's ahead. Thanks in advance!

I'd be careful with that powder, I wouldn't want to swallow anything at all that I can't trust, like a new food or something I haven't had a allergy test for. That's what my dad's GI specialist said and he sounded like a genius so I'm not doubting him.
I switched from the tablets to the powder because the tablets made me gassy and I think the powder actually helps with the bloating, but you do have to have a lot of water. I've heard that drinking several liters of water a day can be dangerous, is that true? And do any of you take other kinds of medication for this, or just the Sevelamer?
Really, though, if you are worried, ask your nephrologist about Sevelamer Carbonate tablets. I have kidney disease and I use them, my potassium was out of control but the tablets really help. The tablets are smaller than a Tic Tac, much easier to take and keep in your pocket, and they're coated so they don't taste bad at all.
I've had some constipation issues since starting Sevelamer, but my doctor recommended upping my fiber intake and drinking more water, which has helped a lot. I've also found it helpful to take the powder with food, since it seems to help with the stomach aches even if it doesn't prevent them entirely.
I've had some issues with vomiting, I've been trying to eat smaller meals so I can get the powder down, but I hate medicine. I feel like I'm vomiting all the time.
I just started using these powders and I'm already feeling bloated and gassy. Has anyone else experienced this? Also I know someone who has had a reaction to it so bad they died, so don't mess around if you start having problems from it.
I have a bad reaction to the powder, it makes my throat feel tight and I feel like I can't swallow with larger amounts. I have to use a smaller dose and take it twice a day.
Anyone else have troubles with the packaging? I feel like the bag always ends up a disaster and I end up with powder everywhere. It's like trying to deal with a powdered donut. I've seen some videos where they use envelopes, don't know if that's a good solution.
I've been on Sevelamer for a few months now, and honestly, the taste isn't great, but if you mix it with something flavored like applesauce, it goes down fine. I use the powders, I use a large spoon to get it out of its tiny flimsy bag without too much mess. Don't skimp on the water in the cup, you need a good splash of water to wash it down. It's helped keep my phosphorus levels in check without too many issues.
