Living with HT-1: Experiences and Advice on Managing Orfadin 5mg Capsules and Diet
I've recently started taking Orfadin 5mg Capsules to manage my Hereditary Tyrosinemia Type 1 (HT-1). Along with the medication, I've had to switch to a special low-tyrosine and low-phenylalanine diet. Does anyone else have experience with this? I'd love to hear about your journey, challenges, and tips for managing side effects. Specifically to start with, how much have you found that the medication has changed your symptoms?

When waiting for a doctor's appointment, I can't help but notice the rash on my hands. I've heard that it could be a side effect. Has anyone else experienced this?
I've been on Orfadin for a while. Remembering to take it and managing the diet is crazy. It has helped a lot, but the side effects can be rough. The low platelet counts have me paranoid because of the bruising. I just keep telling myself that it's better than the alternative of severe liver damage.
Not sure if this is the right place to ask, but has anyone experienced changes in eyesight while on Orfadin? I've been having some trouble with bright lights lately.
I had some serious eye irritation at first, but it went away after a few weeks. Maybe it was just my body adjusting. I hope you feel better soon!
I recommend keeping a food diary for the first few weeks. It helps you identify what you can and can't eat. You'll be surprised by how many foods are high in tyrosine and phenylalanine.
The key to sticking to the diet is finding substitutes for your favorite foods. There are plenty of low-tyrosine and low-phenylalanine recipes online. You just need to be patient and experiment a bit.
This drug is a lifesaver, but the diet is brutal. I've had to cut out so many of my favorite foods. Anyone got any good low-tyrosine recipe ideas?
I've been lucky with Orfadin. No major side effects so far, just some stomach discomfort. I'm grateful for this medication, but I wish the diet was easier to follow. At this point, I'm just trying to get used to the new taste of food.
