I've been prescribed Mercaptopurine 20mg/ml Oral Suspension for my leukemia treatment. It's been a bit overwhelming to learn about the possible side effects. I've heard some horror stories, but I've also read that many people tolerate it well. I'm curious to know if anyone has any advice or personal experiences with this medication? Specifically, how do you manage some of the common side effects like diarrhea and vomiting? And is it true that there are some serious but rare side effects that I should be particularly worried about? Are there any long-term effects I should be aware of?

I managed my side effects with a mix of medication, lifestyle changes and keeping a close eye on my blood counts. And I do have to say that it's worth it, because the relief I felt from my symptoms was worth it in the end. I'm grateful to have it as an option.

Speaking from experience, the warning about the rare but serious conditions is a real one. It's worth discussing these with your doctor. But let me cut to the chase: if you get a fever out of nowhere, go to the ER. No questions asked. I thought I could wait it out and caught a nasty infection.

I was on Mercaptopurine for my leukemia and it was a game-changer in terms of controlling my symptoms. But I did have to take my diet very seriously. I met with a nutritionist who helped me come up with a plan to avoid bouts of diarrhea and stomach pain. It's worth it to get a dietitian involved, I think. So take the side effects seriously but don't be overwhelmed by them.

Stay hydrated and keep those electrolytes balanced. I got some packets of oral rehydration solution to keep on hand, just in case. I also found that eating smaller, more frequent meals helped with the nausea and vomiting. Just a few tips that might help someone new to the drug.

Has anyone else had issues with low blood sugar? The fatigue and dizziness were almost worse than the nausea for me. I had to always have a sugary snack on hand.

I've heard horrible things about this med, but many of the side effects are manageable. I was able to control most of the symptoms with a good diet and lifestyle changes. Just do your research, and talk to your doctor.

I was on Mercaptopurine for a while and the fatigue was brutal. My doctor recommended regular, light exercise to help with that. But honestly, the more concerning part was the potential for serious infections. I had to be extra careful around crowds and make sure everyone in my household was up-to-date on vaccines. But my blood counts did improve, so it was worth it.

Gotta watch out for those blood counts with this one. I was on it for about three months and had to do regular blood tests. My doctor also put me on preventive meds for infections and made sure to monitor my liver function. It's a lot to keep track of, so definitely ask your doctor for a care plan so you don't miss any bloodwork.

I understand it can be scary, but the more you know about the side effects and how to manage them, the better. Also, this is a good time to talk to your doctor about your concerns. Don't worry alone.

This medication is serious, but it sounds like it's really effective. I believe in you all!
