My 5-year-old was prescribed Cephalexin 125mg/5ml Susp 100ml for an ear infection. After a few doses, he developed a rash and started itching. I immediately stopped giving him the medication and called his pediatrician. The doctor confirmed it was an allergic reaction. I'm shaken up and want to know if anyone else has experienced something similar. What should I watch out for in the future, and are there alternative antibiotics that are generally safer? I've read about the potentially life-threatening side effects, and I'm terrified. I just want to keep my kid safe. I want to know more about Cephalexin's side effects and how common they are. Can anyone share their experiences, good or bad? Is the risk of severe side effects worth it, or are there other options we should consider?

I've been through something similar. My daughter had a bad reaction to it, but we just had to switch to something similar. If antibiotics are being used to treat a bacterial infection, working with a doctor to find the best option for your child can be a challenge, but it's possible. If a doctor is telling you to take something, it's more than likely because it's the best thing for you, and it's worth it for the doctor to try and find a solution.

Yikes, that sounds scary. I'm glad your kid is okay! It's always important to monitor for side effects when starting a new medication. Just remember to keep calm, and keep every change talked about with the doctor.

I've given Cephalexin to my kids a few times with no issues. It's always nerve-wracking to give antibiotics to kids. Just keep an eye out for any signs of an allergic reaction or other serious side effects, but try to stay calm until a doctor can evaluate them. Remember your doctor didn't give it to your child to make them ill. Usually it's because they feel you can handle the side effects and should. It could potentially be an allergic reaction to something else in their life.

This is so scary! Just remember, most kids tolerate Cephalexin just fine. It's always a good idea to keep an eye on your child when they start a new medication, and if you see any signs of a bad reaction, don’t hesitate to call the doc.
