I was diagnosed with advanced rectal cancer earlier this year, and my oncologist prescribed Lonsurf. From what I understand, it's a combo of trifluridine and tipiracil to stop cancer cells from growing. So far, I’ve been taking it for about 3 months. The side effects can be pretty rough, but I've found a few strategies to manage them better.

I've had some serious side effects, including a lot of diarrhea and nausea. I talked to my doctor about it, and we figured out a good way to manage it. I need to stay hydrated, eat a bland diet, and take anti-nausea meds when needed. The worst part is when my blood cell counts drop, but we monitor it closely to manage it.

I also experience some hair loss, especially in the first few weeks. I was prepared for that, I guess. The hair loss was hard for me and I lost my hair very quickly. But I've learned to deal with it, and see it as a small price to pay for the treatment to be effective, but who knows. There are some people who have worse hair loss and others who don’t experience hair loss at all.

It feels like I’m constantly tired, and I used to exercise a lot. But I just don’t have the energy to do anything except to rest. My doctor recommended some light exercise to keep up my strength and mobility, but it’s tough.

I’ve also noticed some changes in my head, like not being able to think as clearly as normal, and I think it’s because of the medicine. Has anyone else had this experience? I'm worried about my mental health, and it’s been really hard to handle on top of everything else. I’ve noticed that I’m a bit more depressed and anxious, but I’m not sure if it’s related to the meds or just everything that’s been going on.

People are saying that a lot of these side effects will pass, and hopefully that’s the case. I know that it's tough, but I try to stay positive and hope for the best. But it is easy to get down and discouraged while fighting cancer and dealing with all these side effects.

I know some of the side effects are common, but it’s a really tough time. This is hard enough on a person, and the side effects are just adding to it. I’m glad there are others talking about it and sharing their experiences.

It's tough, but remember that every treatment is a step closer to beating this. You're stronger than you think.

I'm glad you're sharing your experience. It can be so helpful for others to know they're not alone in what they're going through. Keep being strong.

I haven't experienced hair loss but I’ve heard a lot about it. What kind of products or hats are you using to help cover it up? I'd like to find out.

I've been on Lonsurf for a while now, and the hair loss was really hard for me... I've found that wearing hats or headscarves helped me feel more comfortable. I know it’s easier said than done, but try to focus on the positive aspects of your treatment and progress. You are a fighter.

Remember to talk to your doctor about any mental health concerns you're having. They can help with that, and it's important to address it head-on. You are not alone, and don't be afraid to ask for help. They are there to support you through this and improve your quality of life.

Has anyone else had issues with their memory or concentration?

I’ve also experienced the electrolyte issues, especially the muscle cramps. My doctor suggested magnesium supplements, and they’ve helped a lot. Sometimes the cramps get so bad and I can’t walk without limping. I can’t wait for all this to be over.
