I just started Pemetrexed as part of my treatment plan for non-small cell lung cancer. I'm really curious about other people's experiences with this chemo. I had my first infusion a few days ago, and while I haven't experienced any severe side effects yet, I am feeling pretty fatigued and my mouth is quite irritated. I know everyone is different, but I wonder how other people coped with the initial treatment? Did anyone else experience these early side effects? And how did your doctors manage them? Keep in mind, I am not a doctor, so I do not know the complete ins and outs of Pemetrexed. I just want to hear some stories so I can prepare myself for the future treatments.

Spent my first week sleeping. No appetite and some nausea. But it was not so bad. A friend made me a stockpile of my favorite treats. But I still have no hair to worry about.

I had some burning and tingling in my hands and feet. It was really unpleasant and I'm glad it was temporary. If anyone is worried about the side effects, remember that it can always be dealt with and it will always pass.

I've noticed a lot of people mention fatigue with Pemetrexed. I've been lucky to avoid that so far, but I'm definitely not feeling as energetic as I used to. Just wanted to say, we are all in this together and it’s okay to ask for help.

I've heard some people have bad lung issues during their Pemetrexed treatment. Luckily, I haven't experienced that, but I know it can happen. I had a few days of trouble after my fourth treatment. But my doctor told me to take 500 mg of acetaminophen every six hours and it really got me back on my feet.

I had severe mouth sores and constipation after my first round. My doctor gave me some tips to manage these symptoms. I found out a couple of things by trial and error. Start eating soft foods like yogurt and soups early on, and stick with them if you can. For constipation, try a gentle laxative first. It really helped me. Also, I always rinsed my mouth with an alcohol free solution before and after meals. Stay hydrated! Ask your doctor about Zofran. My oncologist gave me a prescription after I had a really bad bout of nausea.

On my second round I woke up with a terrible rash. I freaked out and rushed to the ER. Turns out it was an allergic reaction. My doctor switched me to a different chemo regime and I'm doing much better now.

If anyone is experiencing any of those severe side effects mentioned in the original post, please go to the ER immediately. It's not worth risking your life. I had an allergic reaction to my treatment and had to go to the ER.

I've been on Pemetrexed for about 6 months now, and I've had some ups and downs. I've had some issues with my kidneys and my mouth. My doctor has given me some really good advice and it really helped me to deal with these problems. The worst side effects I’ve had are the fatigue and the nausea. The nausea is tough, but I haven’t been throwing up. I think I will be so glad when this treatment is over. I better get some rest. I have to drive about 10 miles to the dialysis center, but I have an appointment with my doctor there so it will be a productive day.

I had a really bad reaction to Pemetrexed. I had a severe allergic reaction and my doctor's office called me an ambulance. I ended up in the ER for a couple of days. I feel pretty down about it. I can't believe that a treatment that is suppose to make me feel better ended up making me feel so sick. But after talking to my oncologist, I am going back to treatment. This time my antibiotics, steroids, and antihistamines will be given in an IV infusion prior to the Pemetrexed. I hope this works.
