My mother was prescribed Aduhelm 170mg Inj, 1.7ml for early Alzheimer’s. What can we expect?
My mother has early Alzheimer’s and her neurologist recently prescribed Aduhelm via infusion. We’re hoping it will slow down the progression of her disease. It’s very hard to find solid information or experiences with this new medication. I’m especially worried about side effects. I’ve read that falls and headaches may be common. I’m looking for any information or support people can provide. We are hopeful this trial can help our mother, but we are also afraid of what is unknown. We are hopeful, but also very worried about the potential side-effects.

Has anyone had trouble with insurance coverage for this? My grandmother was prescribed Aduhelm, but her insurance refused to cover it. They cited the FDA's controversial approval process. That was a difficult time for all of us, and I will never forget watching my grandmother deal with the stress. It took months just to get approval from Medicare, and in the end, it wasn’t covered. Be prepared for that fight, and hope you do not have to face it.
Aduhelm has had some controversy surrounding it, so it's important to be informed. It's not a cure, but it might help slow down the progression. I have personally had no experience with this medicine, but I would encourage you to find a support group for people dealing with Alzheimer’s. It is a good way to share experiences and learn how others have handled side effects. My friend’s grandmother had a really hard time with side effects, but thankfully her doctors were able to help her manage them.
Good luck with this. It’s a scary process, but Aduhelm is worth the risks to a lot of families. I work in a nursing home and have seen this medicine help so many people. I hope this can give you relief and your family some quality time with your mother.
Diarrhea was the worst side effect we had to deal with. We had to change her diet considerably to try to manage it. Make sure to report any issues to her doctors, and keep a close eye on her condition. She swelled up like a balloon, looked really unhealthy. It was the worst to watch, and I hope your family does not have to deal with that. The doctor was also not great at communication when we were trying to get through this. But we did end up switching doctors and I really liked the new one.
I'm so sorry you and your family are going through this. I can tell you that my neighbor's mom had a similar situation. She was prescribed Aduhelm 170mg and the initial course of infusions was intense. Make sure to stay in close contact with her neurologist and report any side effects immediately. Be aware that this drug is new, and the doctors may not know all the side effects. It might be worth writing down every side effect that your family member experiences in case they turn out to be important in the future. Good luck, and I hope the treatment helps.
I have no idea how things are in the US, but here in Canada we had to wait a year just to get on the trial list. We had no coverage from the health system, so we had to rely on donations.
Make sure to keep an eye out for falls. I had to call an ambulance twice for my neighbor. She broke her hip and then had to deal with complications with the surgery. It’s a lot to handle when you’re already dealing with so much.
I’m also dealing with this, but my mother’s case is a little different. We’re getting the infusions at home. It’s been a pain but worth it if it keeps her from getting worse. My mother has had to deal with extreme headaches during infusion but it appears to be keeping her disease at bay. It was just hard to watch her suffer through the headaches.
This is a very tough road. But remember, you're not alone. I found this article helpful when I was looking into Aduhelm. It breaks down the science behind the drug and the potential risks. I'm not a doctor or anything, but it was interesting to read about how it works. My grandmother took part in the clinical trial, and it helped her considerably.
