I've been given Sodium Chloride 0.9% Injection (normal saline) a few times during surgeries and illness. It's supposed to help replace lost fluids and electrolytes, but I've seen some side effects (like injection site pain). Has anyone else had similar experiences? It seems like a lifesaver, but what if there's a risk worse than your actual symptoms? Would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this

I'm a nurse, and I see this stuff all the time. You can have complications from any type of IV fluid. It's important to monitor the patient closely. One time a patient developed a phlebitis (skin infection) at the IV site — oozing, redness, and pain. We had to remove the IV and treat the infection.

I've had normal saline during chemotherapy. It was a bit of a relief, but I did feel more tired than usual. I think it was part of the side effects or it could have been the chemo. Nothing too bad.

Why are you so upset about normal saline? It's just saltwater. It's not like it's some magical potion. Let's focus on the real issues.

I had a really bad reaction to normal saline once. I started feeling extremely dizzy and confused. Turns out I was having fluid and electrolyte problems. It was scary, but thankfully, the doctors caught it in time. If you feel anything out of the ordinary, definitely seek medical help right away.

Fascinating discussion. For those who are curious, here's the deal: IV normal saline is a mainstay in hospitals because it's isotonic, i.e., it has the same salt concentration as the body's cells and tissues. Dehydration, shock, electrolyte imbalances are all potential issues. But I've also seen anaphylactic shock from it, so it's a double-edged sword.

I've had normal saline for a few different issues, and I can say that the most common side effect for me was severe dizziness. It was manageable, but it was definitely something I noticed every time. I usually get nausea, too.

I had a friend who experienced something similar. Doctors gave him normal saline after an accident, and he ended up with swelling in his arms and legs. It was pretty alarming, but he managed to recover. They did the same to his wife during a surgery as well.

I've had normal saline a few times after surgeries. It's great for keeping you hydrated, but I did notice some swelling at the injection site. Nothing too bad, though.
