I recently had an MRI and was given Omniscan as a contrast dye. The procedure went smoothly, but I'm a bit worried about the potential side effects. Has anyone else experienced any issues with this dye? What about the serious side effects listed? I want to make sure I'm not missing anything important. Also, I found the FDA reporting info interesting—anyone know how often serious side effects are reported?

I had no issues with Omniscan, but I did hear about someone who had kidney problems after taking it. It's not clear though if they had pre-existing problems. Is there research on this? It’s always good to be cautious. I would not have known about this if I didn't ask the nurse. She mentioned it's rare but always good to check.

My friend had a severe allergic reaction to Omniscan. It was scary, but she recovered. They put her on meds and she was fine. She had to go to the hospital for a few days. It’s worth mentioning that reactions can vary greatly.

I had Omniscan for an MRI last year and didn't experience any side effects. You're the one in a million who might have a rare reaction. But I can relate to your concern! I'm always anxious about any new meds or treatments. I did wake up in the middle of the night with a headache, but I just took an Advil and it went away. But if you feel any of the serious symptoms stop reading and go to the ER now! I think the majority of people have no reactions at all, and I bet you'll be fine.

I had a bad reaction to Omniscan a few years ago. I started feeling really dizzy and got a nasty rash. It was scary, but the doctors were able to treat it quickly. They switched me to a different contrast dye for my next MRI, and I had no problems. I have no idea why no one mentioned the same reaction can happen if you get the dye again like 5 years later. It's rare but possible. If anyone is at risk I just recommend you ask questions and be prepared.

I work in radiology and see this stuff all the time. Most people don't have any issues, but it's important to be aware of the serious side effects. Allergic reactions can be severe, and kidney problems are a real risk, especially for patients with pre-existing conditions. If you start to feel ANYTHING fishy get checked out. I always advise patients to monitor their symptoms closely after the procedure and to call their doctor if they notice anything unusual.

The FDA reporting is a good idea if you experience something out of the ordinary. Even if it's not serious, it's important to document these things. I honestly don't know how often it will get reported or if it will change the way the drug is prescribed. If you're worried that much maybe just get a different MRI place. It's doubtful but you never know. I know it sounds crazy but they're pumping chemicals in your veins.
