Drinking 4L of lemon-flavored PEG-3350/kcl/sodium sulfate for a colonoscopy prep is no joke. It may sound easy because it's lemon-flavored, but after the first liter it can quickly become horrible. It doesn't taste great to begin with, but then you have to keep drinking it even as you start getting those first pesky cramps and stomach pains. Be prepared, but know that everyone's experience is a little different. Let's swap tips and stories to help make this prep bearable.

I was worried about dehydration and electrolyte imbalances, so I made sure to drink plenty of clear liquids before and after the prep. That helped a lot, even though it seemed odd at the time. I found that the worst part of the prep was that it was so hard to find a bathroom on time.

I've tried a few tips now and find the easiest was to keep the mix cold and drink it through a straw. This helped me get through the first 2 liters without issue. I wish the instructions were clear about how important it is to stay hydrated and drinking clear liquids during the prep.

I did my prep last night, I was really worried about the diarrhea, but it actually wasn't that bad. I was able to stay on the toilet for 60 minutes all the way to the end, so the prep was pretty easy.

I've heard that drinking it through a cold water bottle helps coat the mouth with the liquid so you can't even taste it or smell it. It's not so much about the flavor, but the fact that it has to be such a large volume. You need to really pace yourself. I did the prep exactly as described, except for chilling the whole thing. I finished the prep in 4 hours, but then had to go clean up my bathroom. I don’t recommend the cold water bottle trick because you can't smell it, so you drink it too fast. I'll stick with just chilling it.
