Tetracaine 0.5% eye drops used for numbing the eye’s surface: how to use it safely and what side effects to watch out for
I just got Tetracaine 0.5% Opthalmic Solution prescribed to help numb my eye for a quick procedure. It's used to quickly block pain signals on the surface of the eye, which is great for short medical procedures like removing a foreign object or measuring eye pressure. My doctor said it works fast, but I'm a bit concerned about the side effects, especially the urgent ones. Has anyone used this before? I want to make sure I'm prepared for the possible allergic reactions and other side effects. I'm curious about the burning or stinging sensations some people might experience. Those sounds unpleasant, but I guess it's worth it if it means no pain during the procedure. Also, what should I do if I experience eye irritation, and will my vision change? Any advice or personal experiences would be super helpful, thanks!

I've had a few procedures and got these ophthalmic drops each time. I always experienced some minor discomfort, like burning or stinging, but it's really not that bad, and it goes away pretty quickly. I did have some redness, but it didn't bother me. That was the worst of it. Just follow the instructions, and you should be fine. If you do experience any part of the serious side effects, get help as soon as possible. I'm glad I read the side effects before my procedure, so I knew what to expect.
I had a tiny bit of discomfort, but my eyes felt fine after a few minutes. If you experience any severe pain or changes in vision, definitely contact your doctor. Be proactive, and you'll be fine.
What kind of procedure are you having? I've never had any severe issues, just a bit of temporary redness.
I've never had any issues. I did feel uncomfortable, but I believe our hearts beat faster as well and we've got to be calm and patient with ourselves.
You might experience some stinging or burning. It usually passes quickly. Don't worry too much about it. Just keep an eye out for any changes in vision or severe irritation. That's when you should call your doctor. My procedure was painless with it.
