I worked in an ICU where they used Precedex a lot. It kept patients calm and helped with ventilation, but a scary allergic reaction happened to one patient, a rash, hives and swelling of the face.
This medication is a bit scary. My friend had an allergic reaction and ended up in the hospital for a few days. They got the fever and rash listed as the serious side effects.
My mom was on a ventilator and Precedex was used. She didn't experience any serious side effects, but she had some stomach issues.
Precedex was effective, but I found that the constipation and muscle cramps it triggered were a bit challenging to deal with. I can't believe it's not more widely known about.
Used it once and found that my patient experienced chest pain but nothing major. Contacted the doctor and they said it was a rare side effect and they had seen a few similar cases.
Have you ever seen anyone experience breathing problems? That's the one thing I'm most worried about.
Explained to a patient how the drug works and they decide against it. I was impressed at how much patients can remember and think through when given the right information.
