What surprised me the most about living in Canada
After moving to Canada from the US last year, I've noticed a lot of surprising differences. For example, I was amazed at how friendly people are here. Canadians are known for their politeness, and I can confirm it! Also, the universal healthcare system is fantastic. I had no idea how much I took private insurance for granted until I didn't have to worry about medical bills. The winters are much harsher than I expected, but I've grown to love the cozy, hydrated lifestyle. But what was the most surprising thing for you when you moved to Canada? I'd love to hear others' experiences and unique observations.

How do you get used to the winters? I'm thinking of making the move myself.
I've been here for 5 years and still am not used to the cold. But I'm in love with the nature and hiking trails.
I think I miss the sheer amount of stores we have in the states. I love Canadian stores, but the amount of stores is much smaller, and the variety of products is less. It's harder to find things here.
I think the fact that you can't pump your own gas is a surprise for a lot of Americans. It took me a while to figure out how to ask for regular or premium. Also, the taxes are higher, but you do get more in return. Universal healthcare is a huge plus, and the education system is top-notch. Also, the free education for kids up to 5 years old means a lot of people can work full time, since kids can stay in school until they're 18, which gives a lot of people time to work.
The hockey culture is intense. I didn't realize how much of a big deal it is until I moved here. But it's fun to get into it!
