Pemetrexed is a chemotherapy drug commonly used to treat certain types of lung cancer and mesothelioma. It works by interfering with the growth of cancer cells, leading to their eventual death. Administered as an injection into a vein, Pemetrexed can be quite effective, but it comes with a set of side effects that patients need to be aware of. To mitigate these side effects, patients are advised to take folic acid and vitamin B12 supplements, as well as a steroid medication like dexamethasone before treatment.

Side effects can range from mild to severe. Common side effects include fatigue, constipation, mouth sores, and hair loss. However, more serious side effects such as allergic reactions, infections, bleeding, high blood sugar, and fluid and electrolyte imbalances require immediate medical attention.

Understanding the potential side effects and knowing how to manage them is crucial for anyone undergoing Pemetrexed treatment. I'm curious to hear from others who have experience with this drug. What were your experiences like, and how did you cope with the side effects?

Pemetrexed can be hard on the body, no doubt about it. I had to take a break from work for a while to manage the fatigue and general weakness. Make sure to listen to what your body needs, and don't push through if you can avoid it.

Has anyone else had severe skin reactions? My mom got some weird rash that the doctors said could be related to the treatment.

I’ve been through it and honestly, yes, it’s hard. But if you stay on top of the supplements and your meds and take enough time to recover, it's doable. It’s a tough road but worth it if it helps fight the cancer.

I think the biggest thing to watch out for is infections. My immune system was so weak that even a small cut could become a big issue. Had to be super careful. Also good to remember the potential for kidney problems, shortness of breath, and skin irritation. I had a friend who got a severe skin reaction and spent a few weeks in the hospital because of it.

I've been on Pemetrexed for a few months now, and while it's tough, the folic acid and vitamin B12 supplements really help. My oncologist also gave me some tips on managing the nausea, which has been a lifesaver.

I knew someone who had a really bad allergic reaction to it. Scary stuff, but thankfully they caught it early. Always good to keep an eye out for those symptoms.

Won’t be a fun ride. Wish I could say it's not bad but just trust your doc to keep an eye on you.

I can't believe how dry my mouth got. Drinking lots of water and using a moisturizing mouthwash helped a lot.

Just got diagnosed and my doctor prescribed Pemetrexed. I’m a bit scared about all the possible side effects. Is it really as hard as it sounds? Anyone have any advice for first-timers?
