I've been using Acyclovir 5% Ointment to treat cold sores. While it seems to help with healing, I've experienced some side effects the packaging didn't warn me about. I want to know if anyone else has had similar problems or if there's anything I can do to mitigate these issues. I'd love to hear from anyone who has dealt with skin irritation, burning, or stinging from this medication. It seems like these aren't life-threatening but are still pretty unpleasant. I know the side effects can vary, but I'd love to hear some practical advice or tips on how to manage these symptoms. Also, if anyone knows about other possible side effects that might not be listed, that would be helpful.

This topic has me thinking about other medications that have similar side effects. My skin reacts to everything. It's the worst. If you find any good solutions, please share! I'm still looking for something that works for me.

Try applying ice to the infected area. It might help relieve some of the symptoms while the ointment does its job. It can also reduce swelling.

I used this ointment before and experienced a lot of itching. In my experience, taking an antihistamine helped a lot. It might be worth talking to your doctor about this option as well.

I experienced burning with this medication too. It went away after a few weeks, but it was pretty rough at first. It might be worth sticking with it if you can tolerate it, but definitely talk to your doctor!

I have used Acyclovir 5% Ointment for years and never had any issues. What brand do you use? I have noticed there are several different brands. Do you think it might be the brand that is causing the issue?

I've had similar issues with skin irritation. I found that applying a thin layer of hydration helps reduce the burning sensation.

I never had any of these side effects. Maybe it's just your skin type? Try using a different brand.

The burning sensation definitely sucks, but it's temporary. Just remember that's the virus talking!

I've had to deal with numbness in a few fingers and toes. My doctor suggested I might have this allergic reaction going on. I will talk to my doc about it next week. Acyclovir 5% Ointment is the only thing I've changed lately. Has anyone else had side effects like these?

Acyclovir 5% Ointment worked wonders for my cold sores, but I did experience some itching and burning. I started using it early in the onset of a cold sore and it seemed to help a lot. I would recommend using it as soon as you feel that familiar tingling.
