I've been using Double Antibiotic Ointment for minor cuts and scrapes for years, but recently I had a strange reaction. My skin turned red and started itching badly. I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences and how they handled it. The package insert lists some serious side effects, and I'm not sure if what I experienced was just an allergic reaction or something more serious. The ointment is supposed to help prevent infections, but I'm starting to worry about the side effects. Has anyone else had a bad reaction to this ointment or know anyone who has? I would love to hear some stories or advice on what to do next.

I use it all the time for minor cuts. Never had a problem, but I guess everyone's different. I'm just glad I haven't had any serious reactions

This thread is scary. I've always used Neosporin in the past. But I've had less success with that so I grabbed the double antibiotic one. Not sure which to go with now.

I had a friend who got a strange rash from it. She went to the dermatologist and they said it was a reaction to the ointment. She switched to a different brand and it cleared up right away.

I had a bad reaction to it once too. My skin got really swollen and I had trouble breathing. Went to the ER and they said it was an allergic reaction. Haven't touched the stuff since. Definitely worth checking with a doctor.

I've used this stuff for years on my kids. Never had any problems. But everyone reacts differently, so it's worth paying attention to any strange symptoms. If you're worried, talk to your doctor!

This is why I always read the side effects list. People act like side effects are rare or don't happen, but they do. Be careful folks!

It's always good to be cautious with topical ointments. If you're experiencing any severe reactions, seek medical help right away. If it’s a minor reaction, try switching to a single-antibiotic ointment and monitor your symptoms. Always patch test to be sure before applying to a large area.

I had no idea this could cause serious allergic reactions. I've been using it for minor burns and cuts, but I'm definitely going to be more cautious now. Thanks for sharing your experience, OP.

I've used Double Antibiotic Ointment for years without any issues. But I always make sure to do an allergy patch test before applying it to a new wound. I'll put a small amount on the inside of my elbow and wait 24 hours to see if there's a reaction. If there is, I switch to a different ointment. If you've experienced skin redness and itching, it's possible you're having an allergic reaction to one of the active ingredients, Bacitracin or Polymyxin B. If you want to try a different ointment, you can look for one with a single antibiotic. It could be that you're reacting to one of the two in the Double Antibiotic ointment.

If you're having bad reactions, you might want to use a different ointment. If you're not sure which one to use, I have had good luck using Neosporin. But if you do react to that then try aquaphor.
