I've been taking Diphenhydramine 25mg tablets for my seasonal allergies, and they've been helping with the sneezing and itchy eyes. However, I've started feeling pretty drowsy, and it's affecting my daily activities. I know it's meant to make you sleepy, but I'm wondering if this is normal or if I should be concerned. Has anyone else experienced this? I've also heard some scary things about side effects. Do I need to worry about any of them with regular use? And on top of that, how do I know if the allergy is bothering me less or if I'm just too sleepy? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks. Also, I'm due for a check up soon, should I ask my doctor about trying a different antihistamine, or is this the norm?

I used to take Diphenhydramine for allergies, but I switched to loratadine after feeling too drowsy. What I wanted to talk about was actually the side effects, Diphenhydramine has some serious ones, and I didn’t even know a lot of them. Blisters, difficulty breathing, those are all things I didn’t even know about before, and I didn’t even experience them! Be cautious and know the signs and talk to your doctor, this is really important, Diphenhydramine has some really scary side effects, I'm personally just glad I didn’t have any of them.

Diphenhydramine can definitely make you feel sleepy, that's why it's often used for insomnia. But if it's interfering with your daily activities, you might want to consider talking to your doctor about other options. Some people have some weird reaction with it and have been a bit more drowsy than others. I remember my friend taking it and he was super tired! And remember, it’s super important to not just stop taking your meds, you should always ask your doctor before stopping, I remember I had this friend who stopped their meds because they felt very drowsy, and ended up with a really bad allergic reaction.

I've taken Diphenhydramine for years and have always felt pretty drowsy afterwards. It doesn't really bother me because I take it at night, but you might want to talk to your doctor about switching to a non-drowsy antihistamine if it's affecting you during the day. I totally get the struggle, I took a whole bunch of allergy meds once and I was sleeping 18 hours a day, I felt like a zombie. But yeah, just remember it's normal to feel sleepy, but also remember you're always the best judge of your situation and it's always good to chat with a doctor. They are there for us!
