We’re a family of 4, with 2 toddlers. We cook almost all our meals at home and are fairly budget-conscious but like to make strategic splurges. We’re midway through planning a significant kitchen remodel (approx. 100k budget). Our appliances budget is 10-15k, and I’m struggling with whether to splurge on a 14-15k built-in 42" fridge or go practical with a 36" freestanding fridge. We’ll be getting custom cabinets and a new island. I’ve been looking at Thermador for the 42" and Bosch for the 36".I’m having a hard time justifying the extra cost on a built-in knowing they will eventually need to be replaced. If anyone has tips on making a 36" freestanding fridge blend in with custom cabinets, or advice in general, I’d love to hear it! We're here for the long haul, planning to stay put for 15-20+ years.

Do it. Get the Thermador. You only live once, and it’s a fridge you’ll use every single day. Plus, the resale value on a home with high-end appliances is better.

What about maintenance costs? Do you know if one brand is more reliable than the other, or if they have better warranties?

I went with a 36" freestanding fridge and had my cabinets custom built around it. It looks great and I saved a ton of money. Plus, if you ever want to upgrade, you can just swap out the fridge without tearing out cabinets. It was a no-brainer for me.

I had a 42" built-in and honestly, didn't notice a huge difference. The 36" is a standard size. You can build cabinets around it, just pay attention to the depth and height on the fridge dimensions.
