I've been prescribed Sucralfate 1gm/10ml U/d Suspension to help heal an ulcer in my duodenum. I've been taking for a few weeks now. The medicine is supposed to form a protective coating over the ulcer, shielding it from stomach acid and helping it heal. However, I've been experiencing some side effects that I'm not sure are normal. Has anyone else had similar issues? I'm really hoping to get some insights and advice from others who have been through this. My doctor mentioned the rare but serious side effects like signs of an allergic reaction or high blood sugar. How likely is it to experience these? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I felt light headed and had a lot of hives. After taking it i felt this pain in my chest that was really bad. I had to go to the hospital. I’d be extra careful if I were you, and definitely talk to your doctor ASAP if things aren’t feeling right.

I found that taking it with food helped a lot with the constipation issue. Also, drink plenty of water. The coating it forms is supposed to be like a protective bandage, and it really helps with the healing process.

I took Suralfate for a month and had no issues at all. My ulcer healed up great, no side effects. Good luck.

If all you have is constipation, it sounds like you're okay and don't need to worry. I think most people have that, and it doesn’t usually indicate any kind of a serious issue. Others here give good advice—stay in touch with your doctor and don’t hesitate to reach out for advice if you feel something is wrong.

I just started taking this and I'm already feeling really constipated. Is this a normal side effect? I hope it goes away soon!

This thread is making me worried about starting Sucralfate. My doctor said it's important to take it exactly as prescribed and to monitor for any serious side effects.

Ugh why so much info on the bad side effects. It's bad enough to have an ulcer, and you make me think that the medicine will be worse!

I've had a strange reaction where my breath started smelling like fruit. Scared the hell out of me at first. It turned out to be a side effect of the medicine. Be careful the first few weeks. It may be a sign of high blood sugar.
