I was recently prescribed Pot Chl/dextrose 5%/nacl0.45% IV fluid for dehydration, and I'm a bit nervous about the potential side effects. The doctor mentioned that most people tolerate it well, but I'm still worried. I've heard that some people can experience severe reactions. Has anyone had any severe side effects from this drug? What was your experience? Also, how common are the side effects like rash or hives?

I want to be able to recognize any severe side effects and get help as soon as possible. Please help if you can! Thanks!

I would be more worried if it was an antibiotic because IV's are a possible entry point for infections. The dextrose and salt are just nutrients. Its a very common IV and its safe and effective

Dehydration is no joke. It can really mess with your electrolytes. Just make sure to monitor the site for any signs of infection. It’s pretty standard stuff, though.

I’ve had a few IV’s and never had a problems with any type of IV. I would be more worried about the underlying issue that required the IV.

I’d be willing to bet that the risk for IV site infection is higher than any of the other side effects. As long as its sterile, you should be fine.
