Has anyone had a bad reaction to Alcaine 0.5% Ophth Soln 15ml eye drops?
I recently had Alcaine 0.5% Ophth Soln 15ml eye drops prescribed to me by my doctor for a minor eye procedure. The doctor said it's a common solution used to numb the eye for short procedures. It worked great for the procedure, but afterwards I experienced some burning and stinging, which I know are possible side effects. However, I'm a bit concerned because I've heard some horror stories about rare but serious side effects like changes in eyesight and severe eye irritation. I already have a history of eye issues, so I'm particularly worried about this. I was wondering if anyone else has had a bad reaction to Alcaine or similar eye drops and how they dealt with it. Has anyone here had an allergic reaction or any other severe issues? Also, should everyone be doing a patch test before a doctor uses it on an eye? I'd appreciate any advice or personal experiences. Thanks!

I'm surprised the doctor didn't explain all this to you. I'm pretty sure complicated medical education requires that you be told about all possible side effects before they do anything, so you might want to give them a call and let them know you didn't feel well-informed.
I have a friend, they are a nurse and after this happened to my coworker, it's pretty much the only eye drop they will use for anything anymore. They was pretty convinced that this was by far the safest choice. It reminds me of when someone thinks they have a reaction to something, and the doctor says someone had a reaction and then decides it's a better idea to switch to a different medication than deal with the pain. Health care providers are weird like that. But I am not sure if it's the best idea to take something that could cause significant changes in eyesight...
I personally have a hard time believing that any drug is completely safe. But I do think that the benefits probably outweigh the risk. I guess I would ask the doctor if you should get your eyes checked before you do anything else; if you have no issues, you should be fine. Plus, I've always been told to take precautions with anything new. Be sure to report any possible reactions to your doctor.
If you’re experiencing side effects, it’s definitely worth mentioning to your doctor and maybe trying a different brand for the procedure. I think it's better to be safe than sorry. Also, how did your friend have an allergic reaction if it only has one ingredient? Shouldn't an allergic reaction just be to the ingredient itself and not the dropper? I don't know, maybe I'm overthinking it.
I had Alcaine once and had no idea what it was until I looked it up. I remember telling my doctor I didn't want anything in my eye. They said it was just water and would numb me. And I guess it did the job. I guess I was a bit disappointed because I didn't feel any difference at all. But maybe my eyes had been overreacting and sensitive to everything because of how dry and red they were before. If you have a bad reaction, go to the doctor immediately. Don’t wait it out.
I've used Alcaine a few times and never had any issues. But I did have a coworker who had a severe allergic reaction. She got hives all over her body and had trouble breathing. It was scary, and she had to be rushed to the ER. If you're feeling uncomfortable, go to the ER. It’s better to be safe, especially with something as delicate as your eyes.
I had a similar experience with a different eye drop. It caused severe irritation, and I had to rinse my eye out immediately. I don’t think it was a serious reaction. The doctor gave me other eyedrops. I think the best way to avoid a bad reaction is to tell your doctor about any allergies or sensitivities you have. It seems counterintuitive, but if you expect to have a reaction to Alcaine, it's probably better to ask for something else instead. Also, who knows? You could be allergic to something different and not even know it.
