I've been dealing with a stubborn cold and allergies this week. My doctor prescribed Westussin DM Nf Oral Liquid to help manage my symptoms. I looked it up and found it has an antihistamine, a cough suppressant, and a decongestant to help with a runny nose, sneezing, and coughs. I've heard that this drug can have some serious side effects, so I'm a bit concerned. Has anyone else taken this and had any issues? I want to make sure I'm informed and prepared just in case. How do you usually feel about a prescription vs over the counter treatments for a common cold? Also, the drug literature mentions seeking medical help for things like severe headache, dizziness, or even swelling of the mouth or lips. How do you know if what you're experiencing is serious enough to warrant a visit to the ER? I've never experienced anything like that, but I don't want to be caught off guard.

I actually got some relief and no lasting side effects. Although it was a bit hard to find a good rhythm for when to take the medication. By the end of the day I felt groggy from the decongestant. Still, I didn't have to fight off the cold for too long. As long as you take a smaller dose at night, I think it can be used safely.

This is the worst feeling. I can't really tell if this is a more urgent issue or just an allergic reaction.

I think it's best to stick to over-the-counter stuff. But that's just me. I've had a lot of problems with prescriptions in the past. If you're doing that, you may want to think about whether that changes what you do about the medication. I've heard a lot of complaints about it being overpriced, but I'm not sure if that ever got resolved. Specific brand preferences? I'm not really sure how they all work in practice.

Did the stuff work for you? I've never really noticed anything. I think I'll just stick with ibuprofen and Sudafed. No real reason that I know of. I've never really had any problems, so I'm not really worried about the side effects. That stuff around the allergic reactions doesn't seem to apply to me. I don't know if that's just because my body is weird or what.

I had the controversial experience of not wanting to be on any medications what-so-ever. I would rather have a few days of bad cold than deal with the side effects. I think the best thing is to really just live with it. I've had a lot of issues with allergic reactions and weird side effects from medications in the past. Maybe I can't compare it directly, but the other stuff just bothered me in the same way. I couldn't even take something like a daily multi-vitamin anymore because of all the reactions. I guess it's good that some people get relief from it, but it doesn't really work for me.
